Background : Background Born in Nice in 1807 From 1834 he was associated with the conspiratorial nationalism of Mazzini’s Young Italy Built a reputation for guerilla warfare in South America Made an international reputation for his defence of Mazzini’s Rome in 1848 Personality and Aims : Personality and Aims His aims for Italy were simple. He did not care for the constraints imposed by International diplomacy or by economic backwardness- he wanted a united Italy Wanted a republic, but a constitutional monarchy would be acceptable Political views were complex. His obituary in the Times claimed: “ In politics, as in arms, his mind lacked the basis of a rudimentary education. He rushed to conclusions without troubling his head about arguments. His crude notion of democracy… were jumbled together in his brain and jostled one another in hopeless confusion.” 1882 Slide 4: Don’t forget my striking appearance.. It became legendary Surprisingly true- it was his flamboyant character and revolutionary adventures which made him such a focus for patriotic and nationalist sentiment So what were his achievements to the unification process?(The facts) : So what were his achievements to the unification process?(The facts) April 1860 revolt in Sicily led by Mazzinians and National Society May 1860 Garibaldi gathers 1200 volunteers to join the revolt. With 3000 men he takes Palermo Garibaldi becomes dictator of Sicily- he suppressed revolts and won over the landowners( Introduced Piedmontese laws) Garibaldi takes his Red Shirts to the mainland and captures Naples (60,000 Mazzinians) November 1860- Garibaldi hands over his conquest to Victor Emmanuel So how significant was his contribution? : So how significant was his contribution? Focal point for patriotic sentiment Inspired military leadership A contrasting approach to unity-active and non-intellectual Made the movement relevant to the masses Focal point of national sentiment : Focal point of national sentiment All his actions were driven by a desire for national unity His revolutionary past gave him status and credibility with nationalists He was admired internationally, the British did not view him as a dangerous revolutionary. His honesty and integrity was respected The successful exploits of “theThousand” forced the unification of the North and South : Inspirational military leader The successful exploits of “theThousand” forced the unification of the North and South A brilliant leader. Decisive and determined. Guerilla fighter par excellence (Stiles) He inspired his men to believe in the cause of Italian unification. He faced scared and demoralised forces in Naples, and the conquest of Sicily was helped by a peasants revolt But why was his direct military approach successful in 1860 when it had failed before? : But why was his direct military approach successful in 1860 when it had failed before? In Sicily the Palermo revolt was taken up by the masses in the countryside Victor Emmanuel was in contact with Garibaldi-he saw an opportunity to extend his political influence. Piedmont let it happen Cavour did not want to challenge Garibaldi- he was too popular. He kept his mouth shut and his options open Austria’s failure in the 1859 war exposed the Neapolitans A contrasting approach to unification... : A contrasting approach to unification... According to historians his contribution falls halfway between the radicalism of Mazzini And the political work Of Cavour Historians perspectives : Historians perspectives T.A Morris “ Mazzini kept the flame of Italian nationalism burning… …but in material terms achieved very little. Cavour achieved much but had to dirty himself and his reputation in the murky waters of European politics to do it. By his dashing and naïve reliance on direct military action, Garabaldi seemed to many to avoid these traps.” G.M Trevelyan His work should be “ an encouragement to all high endeavour amongst us in a later age, who, with our eyes fixed on realism and the doctrine of evolution, are in danger of losing faith in ideals.” Conclusions : Conclusions Garibaldi forced the hand of Cavour and Victor Emmanuel II. He took the initiative away from Piedmont . He imposed a programme of wider unification upon Cavour Ensured that radical nationalists would be responsible for the geographical shaping of the unitary Italian state.
