The First Klan : 

The First Klan Founded in 1865 by Confederate War Vets Quickly adopted violent means against “carpetbaggers, scalawags, and freedmen.” Southern elites condemned the increase in murders. Destroyed by President Andrew Johnson’s enforcement of the 1871 Civil Rights Act.

The Second Ku Klux Klan : 

The Second Ku Klux Klan Founded in 1915 after a post-WWI growth of social tensions. Migration and immigration created waves in the labor force. Klan members quickly adopted violent tactics including cross burning and lynching. http://www.teachertube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=387a4dc56052bc6d035d

The re-“Birth” of the KKK The film The Birth of a Nation and the shocking newspaper coverage of the trial and lynching of Leo Frank led to a growth in Klan membership. Frank, who was Jewish, was accused of murder and rape in Atlanta.

Membership : 

Membership At its peak in the mid-1920s, the organization included 15% or more of the nation's eligible population, approximately 4–5 million men.

Crimes by KKK members Developed alliances with Southern officials such as Birmingham Police Chief Bull Connor and Alabama Gov.
