INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNET The internet has millions of users all over the world. It has revolutionized the lives of people, extending its services in all areas. The most popular use of internet is retrieval of information. The World Wide Web is a huge storehouse of information on all topics. To browse or surf the web for information, we need a browser software such as the Internet explorer, Netscape navigator or Fire fox. Each website has its own address on the internet which is known as the Uniform Resource Locator (U.R.L) which has to be entered in the browser’s address bar. Netscape navigator and Fire fox

SEARCH ENGINES : 

SEARCH ENGINES Sometimes we do not know the URL of the site containing the required information. This is when we use the search engine. There are many search engines available on the Net. The search engine program uses keywords to search its database of web pages and then displays the matching web addresses. Some popular search engines are Google.com, Altavista.com, Yahoo.com and Khoj.com. Google, Yahoo and Altavista search engines

Finding people on the internet : 

Finding people on the internet The internet is not only used to find information but also to find people. Public Directories are services which store information about people. We can use public directories to find people, friends and relatives. Four11, Bigfoot are some common public directories. Public Directories- 411 and BestCalls.com.

ELECTRONIC MAIL : 

ELECTRONIC MAIL The e-mail is a fast , easy and inexpensive way of communicating over the internet. It’s one of the earliest and most popular services of the internet. E-mailing allows us to send text messages, images, videos, music files to any internet user having an e-mail account. We need to have an e-mail account to send or receive mails. Nowadays most web portals or search engines offer free e-mail services. Some of these sites are- yahoo.com, google.com, gmail.com, rediffmail.com etc. E-mail accounts on rediffmail, gmail and yahoo mail.

DOWNLOADING FILES : 

DOWNLOADING FILES Web pages can be saved on our hard disk for viewing when we aren’t connected. This is known as downloading. It’s possible to download software from web servers. The types of softwares that can be downloaded are- Freeware are software that can be downloaded for free. Shareware are software which can be downloaded for free but payment will be required after sometime. Trialware are software which can be downloaded for trial purposes but the actual software requires payment. Betaware are new software that need to be tested so that shortcomings are pointed out. Updates and Antivirus software- Licensed antivirus software needs to be updated regularly. Updates can be downloaded from the net. Antivirus and trialware software

CHATTING : 

CHATTING Chatting is talking in real time over the Internet. E-mail is not real time as the parties do not have to be online at the same time. A chatroom is a site which lets us send typed messages which are immediately received by our friend. Our friend can then answer to those messages. So, in this way an online text conversation takes place. Some browsers have their own chat programs. Eg.- Internet explorer provides Microsoft chat etc. Google, msn, skype and yahoo chat.

INSTANT MESSAGING : 

INSTANT MESSAGING Instant messaging program allows us to create a group which consists of friends, family, or people at work, with whom we can engage in a private chat when we’re online. Whenever any one in the group comes online, all the others who are online are notified. Some examples of popular instant messaging programs used by people are- ICQ, MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger, AOL messenger etc. Instant messaging programs

VIDEO CONFERENCING : 

VIDEO CONFERENCING Video conferencing is a facility provided by the internet where a group of people placed all over the world can have an online conversation. They can hear , see each other and exchange text messages at the same time. It is a form of communication using combination of video, audio and text data. In video conferencing, the participants can view each other on their monitors, their images are captured by the web camera, their voices by microphones and the speakers play the audio received.. E- COMMERCE : 

E- COMMERCE E-commerce refers to the buying and selling of goods and services online. The internet is becoming extremely popular as a place to carry out business. Individuals or companies wishing to sell a product can do so by hosting their own websites or advertising their products on web portals which have been created particularly for such transactions. This is called Online Marketing. After selling the product online payment can be done using credit cards and the items are received at our doorstep. Online buying and selling of airline and railway tickets etc. are very popular commercial activities. This is called online shopping. Buying airline tickets, laptops etc. online

NEWSGROUPS : 

NEWSGROUPS Newsgroups are online discussion groups where people with similar interests can voice their opinions. A wide range of topics like politics, sports etc. are covered here. People can post information or write articles on specific topics in a news group so that others can read them. A software like Microsoft Outlook Express or Netscape News is required to post or read articles. USENET is a network started in 1979 in North Carolina, USA. It has thousands of newsgroups which are a source of great information for its users. Usenet

Internet Telephony A category of hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls. For users who have free, or fixed-price Internet access, Internet telephony software essentially provides free telephone calls anywhere in the world. To date, however, Internet telephony does not offer the same quality of telephone service as direct telephone connections. There are many Internet telephony applications available. Some, like CoolTalk and NetMeeting, come bundled with popular Web browsers. Others are stand-alone products. Internet telephony products are sometimes called IP telephony. SOCIAL NETWORKING : 

SOCIAL NETWORKING Social networking sites are created to stay in touch with friends. We can create personal web pages on sites hosted by services like Orkut, Hi5, Facebook etc. Here social networking communities are created where, an initial set of founders send out messages inviting members of their own personal networks to join the site. Users fill out profiles that include personal information, photos and videos. Social networking sites

DISADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNET : 

DISADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNET The internet is a global network of computers and is constantly increasing in size and capability. With the growth of the Internet the quality, quantity and variety of information has also changed. The internet has no single governing body and so there are no official rules and regulations to control the activities involving it. This has lead to many problems being associated with the internet. Individuals or organizations use their computers to store important and valuable data. Very often this data is confidential and needs to be stored securely. However, with the internet connecting all these computers this security is being threatened. The internet gives hackers and crackers easy access to the data being stored in the personal computers of individuals or organizations. Internet disadvantages

PLAGIARISM : 

PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is copying or duplicating published articles or information without acknowledging or giving credit to the author. Plagiarism is duplication of someone’s work without prior permission. It is an illegal activity and punishable by law. The internet is an ocean of information. Without any stringent rules it’s extremely easy to copy and duplicate the information available on the net.

The internet is an open forum. Anyone has the right to upload the information they want over the Net. Net users believe what they find on the World Wide Web to be authentic and are often cheated. Not all the information we find on the Net is correct, hence, it is important to look for reliable sources only. A major problem with the internet is that there is no way to exercise an age limit. Children often get exposed to adult content on websites and this is dangerous. INCORRECT OR OFFENSIVE INFORMATION ON WEBSITES

MISUSE OF INFORMATION : 

MISUSE OF INFORMATION When online, it is sometimes required to give your personal details such as name, address, telephone number or even credit card number. People commit cyber crimes by hacking sites which store such confidential information and use it to carry out illegal transactions such as purchasing goods by using another person’s credit card number. Hacking and Cracking of programs.

VIRUS : 

VIRUS Virus is a program which, on entering a computer system, disrupts its functioning. It could damage the data stored and even cause our computer to malfunction. The internet is a major source of virus. A virus could enter our computer system as a result of downloading an infected file from the Net. Malicious people intentionally try to infect other computers on the Net by sending them infected files. Virus infecting the computer

IMPERSONAL MEANS OF COMMUNICATION : 

IMPERSONAL MEANS OF COMMUNICATION People have become so used to sending e- mails or even shorter instant messages that the tradition of writing letters are becoming a thing of the past. Letters have warmth and can be preserved, but e-mail lack the personal warmth of a letter and are usually deleted after sometime. Writing e-mails are replacing letters
