Stereotype is defined as an exaggerated belief associated with a category such as a group of people. It is a tendency to believe that anyone or almost anyone who belongs to a particular group will have a certain characteristic. Do not make assumptions that are not true : Do not make assumptions that are not true Don’t judge : Don’t judge Appearances are not always what they seem : Appearances are not always what they seem We are all different on the outside but we should not be judged! : We are all different on the outside but we should not be judged! Individual Discrimination : Individual Discrimination and Racism Slide 43: Individual Racism/Discrimination is any behavior by an individual that leads to unequal treatment because of race or ethnicity. Institutional Discrimination andInstitutional Racism : Institutional Discrimination andInstitutional Racism Slide 57: Any arrangement or practice within a social institution or its related organizations that tends to favor one racial or ethnic group (usually the majority group) over another. It may be conscious and deliberate, as in discriminatory voting laws, or subtle and perhaps unintended, as in industrial location decisions that favor suburban whites over inner- city blacks.
