What really happened? Slide 3: FYE First year Experience Designed to intentionally draw students into the college community Designed to help students engage in the learning process Slide 4: Common Reader A tool that allows students to engage and model appropriate learning behaviors Serves as a conversation starter Slide 5: Author Trivia James Bradley was turned down 26 times by 26 different publishers before the book was released. It reached number 1 on the New York Times Bestseller List the week after its release. Slide 6: In 2006, the story of the six flag raisers was told by famed director Clint Eastwood. Slide 7: The Flag The 2nd flag was 96x56” and taken off of the LST 779. Slide 8: The Flag Four men were going to raise the 2nd flag as the 1st was retired. They were: Strank Block Hayes Sousley The pipe they fitted the flag onto weighed 100 pounds. Slide 9: The Flag “Since the four men appeared to be having difficulty in getting the pipe firmly planted, two onlookers, …Gagnon and …John H. Bradley came to their aid.” Slide 10: The Video Slide 11: The photographer Slide 12: The photographer Rosenthal fell in the ocean the morning he took this picture. His camera did too. Rosenthal didn’t know he’d caught the picture – he just hoped he had. He piled up some loose stones, mounted them and focused on the band of Marines. Slide 13: The photographer Rosenthal is quoted as saying the photo was staged. He thought they were talking about this photo. Slide 14: The Video William Genaust took this video of the flag raising on Iwo Jima. Marine Sgt. William Genaust was killed in March 1945 on Iwo Jima. Slide 15: The Photograph It won: Joe Rosenthal a Pulitzer Prize; President Franklin D. Roosevelt the badly-needed support of the American people to finish off Japan; the Treasury coffers 220 million dollars in war bond sales when it was used as the symbol of the Seventh War Loan drive; unwanted fame for PFC Ira Hayes and PM2 John Bradley; welcomed fame for PFC Rene Gagnon; and, the U. S. Marine Corps a symbol that would memorialize its grit and tenacity forever. Slide 16: The Photograph Slide 17: The Photograph Slide 18: John ‘Doc’ Bradley Doc is the face of the photograph. He is the most obvious person in the frame. He is the father of the author James Bradley. Slide 19: Ira hayes Ira was a Pima Indian from Arizona. He joined the service even though Pima Indians weren’t considered citizens. Ira died three months [after the dedication of the Marine Corp Memorial] after a night of drinking. As Ira drank his last bottle of whiskey he was crying and mumbling about his "good buddies." Ira was 32. Slide 20: Franklin Sousley Frank was happy. He enjoyed being with others. ‘…a fun-loving, playful boy.’ "My regiment took the hill with our company on the front line. The hill was hard, and I sure never expected war to be like it was those first 4 days. Mother, you can never imagine how a battlefield looks. It sure looks horrible. Look for my picture because I helped put up the flag. Please don't worry and write." Slide 21: Mike Strank Mike was a Marine’s Marine. ‘Can you tell that the man in back of him has grasped [his] hand and is helping…push the heavy pole?’ Two months before the battle Mike's Captain tried to promote him but Mike turned it down flat: "I trained those boys and I'm going to be with them in battle," he said. Slide 22: Harlon Block The Texan. A Seventh-Day Adventist. ‘…he continued to wrestle with his Adventist beliefs and their conflict with his military obligations.’ Harlon joined the military with his entire football squad. Originally mis-identified as Henry Hansen. Ironically, Hansen had taken part in the earlier, less celebrated flag raising on Iwo Jima and was killed by a sniper a few days later while being treated for wounds by Pharmacist's Mate Bradley. Slide 23: Rene Gagnon Rene was always looking. ‘He thought he would benefit from his celebrity.’ Rene Gagnon was the youngest survivor and the man who carried the flag up Mt. Suribachi. He was the first survivor to arrive back in the US.
