What is the Common Reader? Who are our Local Heroes? How can you get involved? Slide 3: FYE First Year Experience Designed to intentionally draw students into the college community Designed to help students engage in the learning process Slide 4: Common Reader A tool that allows students to engage and model appropriate learning behaviors Serves as a conversation starter Slide 5: James Bradley was turned down 26 times by 26 different publishers before the book was released. It reached number 1 on the New York Times Bestseller List the week after its release. Slide 6: In 2006, the story of the six flag raisers was told by famed director Clint Eastwood. Slide 7: Common Reader Learning: Doc Bradley Doc is the face of the photograph. He is the most obvious person in the frame. He is the father of the author James Bradley. Learning is the most obvious portion of the Common Reader project, but behind it there are other important lessons. Slide 8: Common Reader Service: Ira Hayes Ira was a Pima Indian from Arizona. He joined the service even though Pima Indians weren’t considered citizens. Service to our fellow man is a supporting role in the Common Reader project. It allows students to move beyond themselves and see a larger, more interesting world. Slide 9: Common Reader Community: Frank Sousley Frank was happy. He enjoyed being with others. ‘…a fun-loving, playful boy.’ Community, or being with others is a large portion of the Common Reader. Helping students find connections between students, faculty and staff is critical to their first year success. Slide 10: Common Reader Excellence: Mike Strank Mike was a Marine’s Marine. ‘Can you tell that the man in back of him has grasped [his] hand and is helping…push the heavy pole?’ Excellence is the backbone of the Common Reader. Through this program we model the academic behaviors we want our students to strive for in their studies. Slide 11: Common Reader Reflection: Harlon Block The Texan. A Seventh-Day Adventist. ‘…he continued to wrestle with his Adventist beliefs and their conflict with his military obligations.’ The Common Reader will challenge every student – some more than others. This process helps them grow and strengthen their resolve. Slide 12: Common Reader Direction: Rene Gagnon Rene was always looking. ‘He thought he would benefit from his celebrity.’ Students looking at the actions of Rene can see how his life was lead by what ‘others’ thought he should do. The Common Reader allows students to think about what they want to accomplish. Slide 13: Looking for Heroes Celebrating Our Local Heroes Our theme is Heroes. ‘…the true heroes of Iwo Jima were the ones who didn’t come back.’ Slide 14: How Can You Join Us Do you know of local heroes we can acknowledge, celebrate and introduce to our students? Join us in creating a tribute to their service by visiting: www.actx.edu/commonreader Read and talk about the book. If you know AC students, talk to them about the book.
