What’s the big deal about bullying now? : 

What’s the big deal about bullying now? IT’S THE LAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As of the summer of 2007, all school districts were required to have an anti-bullying policy in place. This policy was to include plans for how to address acts of bullying. Then in 2008, all school districts were required to modify their current policies, and add a provision about cyberbullying. How is bullying defined in USD 250? : 

How is bullying defined in USD 250? Per our policy: (1) Bullying is a conscious, willful, and deliberate hostile activity intended to harm, induce fear through the threat of further aggression, and create terror. Bullying can be any intentional gesture or any intentional written, verbal, or physical act, or threat that is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive. Bullying creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for a student or staff member that a reasonable person, under the circumstances, knows or should know will have the effect of: (i) Harming a student or staff member, whether physically, non-verbally and verbally, socially, or emotionally; (ii) Threatening to or damaging a student’s or staff member’s property; (iii) Harming someone’s group acceptance; (iv) Threatening or harming a student or staff member through cyber bullying. 2008 USD 250 STATS ON BULLYING : 

2008 USD 250 STATS ON BULLYING 68% of students reported that they had seen someone bullied at school within the last school year. 26% of students reported they had been bullied by someone at school within the last school year. 11% of students reported that in the last school year they missed school because they felt unsafe, uncomfortable, or nervous at school or on the way to/from school. 1 in 4 students reported that during the past school year, they had property stolen or deliberating damaged at school (car, clothing, books, etc.) 11% of students reported that when an adult witnessed bullying, they ignored it. REPORTING PROCEDURES : 

REPORTING PROCEDURES Reporting Procedures1. It is considered the responsibility of all students and school staff members to report acts of bullying to a member of the school staff or administration, as designated. (Regular classroom teacher, counselor, or principal) Staff and/or students will use a bullying report form to report instances of bullying.2. All bullying reports will be taken seriously.3. Student or staff members making a prompt accurate report, either verbally or in writing will have those reports recorded by the staff receiving the same.4. All reports will be kept confidential for both the accuser and the accused, until such time as the misconduct is confirmed and sanctions are imposed.Investigation Procedureso Confidentially interview students involved with the bullying incident. WHAT’S NEXT? : 

WHAT’S NEXT? It is the goal of the USD 250 Anti-Bullying Task Force to collect more data in early 2009 to determine the needs of staff, students, and parents/guardians in regards to combating bully-like behaviors. We hope to share more presentations electronically on specific things such as strategies to use the classroom to combat bullying behaviors and how to more clearly identify different types of bullying.
