ATTRIBUTES OF GOD – SESSION 5:

ATTRIBUTES OF GOD – SESSION 5 Logos Educators Network

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Defining Attributes The divine attributes may be defined as those perfections of God which are revealed in Scripture and which are exercised and demonstrated by God in various works . God’s character is often spoken of in terms of his attributes. God’s attributes show us what he is like . The glory of God is the manifestation of his attributes.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God The categories of divine attributes. Incommunicable attributes Attributes of God that find little or no analogy in humankind . There are divine qualities which cannot be found among his creatures. These are attributes that God does not share or communicate to humankind. Communicable attributes Attributes of God which find some reflection in humankind who were created in God’s image . These are the attributes that God does share or communicates with humankind.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God The difference between these attributes as found in God and as found in humankind is that these are infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in God and they are only partial and severely limited in us . Some Preliminary Considerations All attributes are attributes of the one and only living God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit . The attributes belong equally to each Person of the Trinity. What is said of one Person must be said of all .

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Discussion of the attributes must also acknowledge the incomprehensibility of God. The attributes must be regarded as essential characteristics of the divine nature. Humankind does not attribute these perfections to God; God reveals his attributes to humankind in Scripture. God does not possess his attributes; he is the sum total of his attributes. Each attribute describes God as He is , not just a part of his being or simply what he does.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Question: Could Jesus have emptied himself of his divine attributes (the “kenosis controversy”)? There is no Scriptural warrant for elevating one attribute to a pre-eminence over another.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God God’s attributes must all be understood in light of his infinity (Job 11:7-11, 21:22, Psalm 145:3, 1 Kings 8:27). Infinity is that aspect of God by which everything that belongs to him is without measure or quantity . He is without limit of any kind. God is absolutely perfect . He is without defect . There is nothing in him that could be improved or corrected.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God The Immutability of God God is unchanging in his being, perfections, purposes and promises. God is forever the same . He is not subject to growth, change or adjustment (Psalm 102:25-27, Malachi 3:6, James 1:7, Hebrews 13:8, Numbers 23:19). The immutability of God does not mean that God is impassive, immobile, static or inactive. How do we relate the immutability of God to scriptural references to the “repentance of God” (e.g. 1 Samuel 15:11, Jonah 3:9-10)?

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God The Eternity of God God has no beginning, end, or succession of moments in his own being (Genesis 21:33, Job 36:23, Psalm 90:2, 102:12, Ephesians 3:21, Revelation 1:8, 4:8). Eternity is God’s infinity viewed in relation to time . God is timeless in his own being. God transcends time and possesses the whole of his life all at once. There is no past or future, only an eternal present (Exodus 3:4).

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Although God is not subject to the limitations of time, the Bible recognizes that time is God’s creation and that he is the Lord of history. History is the unfolding of his sovereign counsel (Ephesians 4:11). God sees all events of time equally and vividly .

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God The Omnipresence of God God does not have size or spatial dimensions and is present at every point or space with his whole being (Jeremiah 23:23-24, Psalm 139:7-10, Acts 7:48-49, 17:27-28). This attribute is also called God’s immensity . This attribute does not mean that God is “ spread out .” It means that God is present at all places of the universe with the totality of his being

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Although God is present at all places, he acts differently in different places. God can be present to punish, sustain , or bless . Although God is equally present in all places, the manifestation of his presence is not equal in all places .
