ATTRIBUTES OF GOD – SESSION 1:

ATTRIBUTES OF GOD – SESSION 1 Logos Educators Network

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Session One: “The Idea of Theology” Theology is the science of God and of the relationship between God and the universe, which uses various disciplines of study.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Biblical Theology: The discipline that gives special attention to the teachings of individual authors and sections of the Scriptures and to the place that each of these teachings has in the historical development of Scripture and in progressive revelation.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Systematic Theology: This discipline takes the material from biblical theology and seeks to construct an organic and consistent whole teaching of our knowledge of God and of the relationship between God and the universe.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Historical Theology: This discipline traces the development of Christian doctrine from the time of the Apostles to the modern era and gives account of the results of this development in the life of the church.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Practical Theology: This discipline considers doctrine as a means of renewing and sanctifying men.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Three fundamental truths are needed: The existence of a God who has relations with the universe. The capacity of the human mind for knowing God and certain of these relations. The provisions of a revelation by which God is brought into actual contact with the mind.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God The Importance of Knowing God Man was created to know God and only through knowing him does he have eternal life (John 17:3). Sin cut man off from God’s presence. Only through Jesus Christ can God’s knowledge and presence be restored to man (John 14:6).

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Only through a knowledge of God can man gain the key that unlocks the mysteries of life and discover the purpose for his existence. The practical benefit of knowing God. Contentment (Jeremiah 9:23, 24) Courage and confidence (Daniel 3:16-18; 11:32) God is pleased (Hosea 6:6)

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God The Source of Theology God himself is the only source of knowledge about himself (2 Corinthians 4:4, 1 Corinthians 1:21; 2:9). God has satisfied man’s quest for intelligibility by revealing himself, his divine power and his will so that we may come to know him. Theology is a summary and explanation of the content of God’s self-revelation. God has chosen to bring this revelation to man in two ways: General Revelation and Special Revelation.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God General Revelation (Psalm 19:1-6) It is called “special” because it is a specific disclosure about God, given at first to a people chosen by God, but intended in the end for the whole human race. The universe is a source of theology (Psalm 19:1-6). It comes to all men through creation and the human conscience. In creation (Romans 1:20, Acts 14:15-17 In the human conscience (Romans 2:14-15)

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Special Revelation (Psalm 19:7-8) This revelation is called “general” because it is generally known and it is wider and more general in scope. Special revelation is necessary because of the obvious limitations of general revelation. Special revelation is The Living Word (Jesus Christ) and the Written Word (Holy Scriptures) which gives witness to Him (John 1:1, 14:9, Hebrews 1:1-2, John 5:39). This revelation is personal. God himself and not universal truth is what is revealed.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Since God is the source of both general and special revelation, there is no contradiction between the two.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God The Limitation of Theology Although the source of theology is God himself, it does not profess to give an exhaustive knowledge of God. The infinity of God cannot be fully grasped by the finite mind of humans. It is not true to say that God is incomprehensible (“unable to be known”), but it is true to say that he cannot be fully and exhaustively comprehended.

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God The limitations of human understanding (Romans 11:33-36, Psalm 139:4-6, 1 Corinthians 13:12). The inadequacy of language (1 Corinthians 2:18) The incompleteness of our knowledge of Scripture (Hebrews 5:11,13) The silence of written revelation (Deuteronomy 29:29) The lack of spiritual discernment caused by sin (Hebrews 12:14)

Attributes of God:

Attributes of God Conclusion: In this study we do not expect to construct a system that is perfect, for that is impossible. However, although God cannot be exhaustively known, we can know him truly. We may not know all there is to know about God, but we can know God because this is the promise of the New Covenant (Hebrews 8:11).
