Excel 170i VideoJet Printer How to set up, use and shut down the Excel 170i Excel VideoJet Printer

Excel 170i VideoJet Overview:

The Excel 170i is a high speed printer that is used on production lines to mark products In our facility the Excel 170i Videojet is used to mark all materials that are made on our current production lines We also use the Excel 170i Videojet to mark all packaging materials such as inners and masters before shipment Excel 170i VideoJet Overview

Overview of the Videojet Machine:

Inside of Machine:

Inside of Machine Unless you are a factory trained technician, you should not be in this part of the machine

How it creates the print:

How it creates the print An oscillator on the control board generates A fixed ultrasonic frequency The fixed frequency energizes the piezo -electric crystal which surrounds the nozzle ink chamber. The nozzle crystal vibration breaks the stream into small ink drops.

Set Up of the Excel 170i:

In this segment you will learn how to: Pre-power up checks How to set up the unit to print on products Set Up of the Excel 170i

Start Up Screen:

Start Up Screen This is the current message to be printed F2 Clears the current message F5 Allows you to EDIT the message

Pre-Power up Checks:

Check to see that there is an adequate ink and markup fluid inside the machine Click here to view two tips that make setting up the printer trouble-free Pre-Power up Checks

Ensuring that ink is flowing to the print head:

Ensuring that ink is flowing to the print head When the machine is properly started, you will notice that this this thin blue tube turns dark. This indicates that ink is flowing freely to the print head

Ensuring the ink nozzle is clean:

Take a small amount of the mark up fluid to squirt it over the nozzle to ensure all dried leftover ink is gone Click here to see two important SAFETY tips! Ensuring the ink nozzle is clean

Changing Print Fonts:

Changing Print Fonts To change print fonts Press F5 to EDIT When you have finished Entering the new print codes, Press F4. This starts the printer

Making Adjustments:

Sometimes you the operator may have to make minor adjustments to the Videojet machine in order for the machine to create legible print on the product/packaging Making Adjustments

Print Samples:

Print Samples Why does this print code meet company criteria ? Why does this one not?

Line Speed adjustments:

Line Speed adjustments Click here to learn how to make line speed adjustments

Line Speed adjustments:

Line Speed adjustments Sensor eye Print head NOTE: There is no need to change the placement Of the sensor or the print head. Their location is what determines the change In line speed on the belt

Videojet shutdown:

Videojet shutdown

Nozzle heads BEFORE Cleaning:

Nozzle heads BEFORE Cleaning This is what the print head looks like before the automatic cleaning process. However, when the cleaning process starts, the operator should place a small squirt of mark up fluid in the front of the nozzle head.

Nozzle head AFTER Cleaning:

Nozzle head AFTER Cleaning The cleaning process creates a vacuum and by putting a small squirt of mark up fluid on the nozzle head, you can ensure that ALL ink is cleared from the nozzle head. Failure to do this critical step could result in small amounts of ink becoming dried in the nozzle head and damaging the machine.

Second Operator Shutdown Check:

Second Operator Shutdown Check The blue line that we saw earlier filled with ink, is now void of ink. The operator should check to ensure that all ink has been removed from this line. If not, press the OFF button again to run the automatic shutdown process again. The operator should not have to do this more than two times. If you are having trouble getting all the ink to clear out of this line after two automatic shutdown processes have run, contact Engineering immediately.

Quiz:

Why do you need to put a small squirt of mark up fluid on the nozzle head when you are shutting the machine down? H ow many times should you run the automatic shut down process? Name three buttons on the front panel of the Excel 170i Quiz

Quiz:

4. Why should you never touch anything on the inside of the machine? 5. The two most commonly used types of print are ______ and ______ 6. What is the criteria for acceptable print under company QA standards? 7. What happens when you decrease line speed? Quiz

Quiz Answers:

The shutdown process creates a vacuum, by placing a small squirt of mark up fluid on the nozzle head, the vacuum will suck that back through the lines to ensure the nozzle head is completely clean. No more than two times. Acceptable answers are any three of the following: On, off, cancel, delete, enter, help, head, print High voltage electricity 10x16 and 16x24 sizes Must be complete with best by date and lot code, must be legible when placed on the product The time between product detection and ink placement increases Quiz Answers

At the end…:

Thank you for taking this training session. If you have any questions regarding the correct and safe running of this piece of equipment, please contact your supervisor or a member of our plant engineering staff. Good luck!! At the end…

Special Thanks:

Jim Duffy President and Founder of Protica , Inc. For giving me permission to use our machines in this project Matt Fairchild Maintenance Manager for Protica For providing valuable technical assistance with this project Special Thanks

**TIPS**:

When starting up the printer after it has been sitting for 2-3 days, run the shutdown process. This will ensure that any dried ink is removed from the fluid lines If the Ink and Markup Fluid are low, replace only with Videojet supplies. Using other products will invalidate the service contracts we have for these machines **TIPS**

**SAFETY TIPS**:

The unit should not be in PRINT mode because that energizes the nozzle which contains high voltage. The PRINT mode should only be engaged AFTER the nozzle unit has the cover on after cleaning. **SAFETY TIPS**

Adjustment Information:

Most print adjustments can be made with some very simple changes. First one is changing the line speed. This minor change affects the time between product detection on the line and the application of the ink. If you increase the line speed, the time between product detection and ink application is decreased. If you decrease the line speed, the time between product detection and ink application is increased. Adjustment Information
