Experimental Research: Advantages and Disadvantages Javier Cervantes

Case example for Experimental Studies :

Case example for Experimental Studies Experimental studies – Example 2 A fitness instructor wants to test the effectiveness of a performance-enhancing herbal supplement on students in her exercise class. To create experimental groups that are similar at the beginning of the study, the students are assigned into two groups at random (they can not choose which group they are in). Students in both groups are given a pill to take every day, but they do not know whether the pill is a placebo (sugar pill) or the herbal supplement. The instructor gives Group A the herbal supplement and Group B receives the placebo (sugar pill).  The students' fitness level is compared before and after six weeks of consuming the supplement or the sugar pill.  No differences in performance ability were found between the two groups suggesting that the herbal supplement was not effective.

Experimental Design Looks Like

Advantages of Experimental Research:

Advantages of Experimental Research Control over external factors By controlling for external factors/variables allows researcher to make stronger determination of causality than any other form of research. Causation is very difficult to determine. To do so one needs all three of these to be present for causation: Relationship Time order between two variables Relationships found must not be of confounding variables The fact that the researcher can control for the environment and assure few extraneous factors are involved in the influencing of the experiment. Research can be replicated.

Advantages of Experimental Research:

Advantages of Experimental Research Relationship: Can be (+) or (-) If there is no relationship, there is no causality

Advantages of Experimental Research:

Advantages of Experimental Research Time Order Between Two Variables: To say one variable causes another it must come before the other in time. There exists the possibility that a relationship among variables is reciprocal where both variables influence one-another.

Advantages of Experimental Research:

Advantages of Experimental Research Relationships found must not be of confounding variables : Simply, the variables can not be explained by a third variable.

Disadvantages of Experimental Research:

Disadvantages of Experimental Research Research from a single experiment may be due to chance. It is always possible that findings are caused by extraneous factors that have not been thought of prior to the experiment. The researcher is creating an artificial situation, thus raising the questions: do these effects occur in real-life?

Disadvantages of Experimental Research:

Disadvantages of Experimental Research Experimental research can be difficult to put into practice in educational settings. Lack of the ability to randomize subjects. Little control of the environment.
