The Battle of Britain :

The Battle of Britain Objective: To investigate what the Battle of Britain was, why Britain won and how this changed Germany’s plans. R. Banks

Slide 2:

What to do with Britain was a bit of a puzzle for Hitler, he didn’t really want a war with Britain. However, Winston Churchill made it clear that Britain would not make a deal with Germany Before Hitler could launch a sea attack on Britain, he wanted to control the skies. Background to the Battle

Slide 3:

The German air force [the Luftwaffe] was to destroy the British RAF This would mean that German soldiers could land safely in Britain. France had already been defeated, so Britain stood alone. The German plan

Slide 4:

The Battle of Britain was not a single Battle but rather was a series of air battles which lasted throughout the summer of 1940. German bomber planes and fighter aircraft would attack targets in Britain. German bombers were protected by the MESSERSCHMIT which were supposed to shoot down the British planes. The British had the SPITFIRE and HURRICANE planes What was the BAttle of Britain?

Slide 5:

The RAF consistently out shoot the LUFTWAFFE Britain builds more planes than they lose unlike Germany. Radar is now fully developed giving Britain an advantage. How does Britain do?

RAF :

Air defence system well in place. Fighters were well organised. Radar developed. Spitfires and Hurricanes were better than German planes. Pilots who baled out could easily return to duty Commander was not very good at tactics and caused confusion. Didn’t have the right kinds of aircraft. Could only carry enough fuel for a 30min flight over England. Pilots who baled out became prisoners of war. What are the differences between the two sides? RAF LUFTWAFFE

Slide 7:

The LUFTWAFFE failed to destroy the RAF. This meant that German soldiers could not land safely in Britain so the sea invasion was cancelled. Instead the Germans begin the ‘BLITZ’ – heavy bombing of British cities. They hope that this will force the Government to make peace. Does the defeat of the Luftwaffe change Germany's plans?

Slide 8:

Imagine that you are a German pilot. You have had to bale out of your plane when you got hit by the enemy. You get to the ground safely but you are taken prisoner by the local Brits. Write an imaginary conversation between yourself and your captors. In it you must tell them why Hitler thought it was important to launch an air attack on Britain What the Battle of Britain was. What made the RAF so strong. Why the Luftwaffe was weak. And finally how the defeat of the Luftwaffe will affect the war plans of Germany. Your task
