The real surprise is that it doesn’t happen more often. Considering what most homeowners throw into this machinery on a daily basis, it only stands to reason that the device would occasionally experience problems. The good news is that there are indeed some very simple ways to clean a garbage disposal, and most of them require little more than patience and a few common household items. Here’s what you need: Ice – about 20 to 30 cubes Sink cap or plug Bristle brush Spray cleaner Baking Soda Vinegar Lemon or Lime or OrangeSlide 3: Step 1: Fill your disposal with ice, about 20-30 cubes depending on how big yours is . Turn the disposal on until all the ice has passed through DO NOT TURN ON THE WATER YET!Slide 4: Step 2: Clean the disposal flange and inside the top Lift back the disposal flange and spray some cleaner in the disposal and on the flange. Using a Bristle brush scrub inside the disposal. Scrub the underside and top side of the flange. Keep in mind: It’s not important to be perfect when your doing this part. As long as you are touching the surface’s then you are loosening debris and that is the main goal.“Flood the Zone”: “Flood the Zone” Now put the drain plug/ stopper in the sink Fill the sink about ½ to 2/3 full. Then turn on the disposal and remove the plug/stopper. When you remove the plug/stopper you should notice that the disposal is not as loud as normal. This is because it is entirely submerged in water. You should also notice a type of whirlpool effect in the water as it is entering the disposal. BE SURE: To leave the disposal on for 30 sec after all the water has drained.Slide 6: The procedure here is the same as you would use for a bathtub drain – simply pour about a half a cup of baking soda down the drain, wait a few seconds, then add the same volume of vinegar. This well-known home solution is particularly adept at clearing mineral deposits and destroying bacteria. After several minutes, you will notice the bubbling activity has died down. Try adding boiling water and running the disposal again. In most cases, this powerful one-two-three punch will sanitize and scrub the inside of your garbage disposal in a matter of minutes. This step is for the really dirty or smelly disposal’s. You can skip it if your individual problem isn't that bad. However, when in doubt, do it. It only takes a few minutes to turn a good job into a great one. This is where Carolina Appliance Service & Repair LLC stands out from other service company’s: Attention to detail. Brand specific does not matter, simply use baking soda and white vinegar. They are all the same.“Freshen Up”: “Freshen Up” Now that your garbage disposal is clean and free of bacteria, mold and slime let’s “ Freshen it Up”. This step is one which you should consider doing frequently. As a type of maintenance for your disposal. Choose what you like best Lemon – Lime – Orange Makes no difference as long as it’s a citrus fruit. You could even use tangerines, grapefruit, Etc. Now cut your fruit into small wedges Place fruit into disposal Turn on WITH OUT water briefly – only enough to chop the fruit half way. Let it sit this way for 30 min- 2 hours Now finish with water and allowing the disposal to run until completely flushed.
