VEGAS STYLE Prostitution 101 Personal Marketing for Artists

Global Marketing:

Global Marketing What is global marketing in terms of personal marketing? Global marketing is any means by which you promote your brand – YOURSELF – to a global audience. Generally, this is achieved via the Internet.

PowerPoint Presentation:

It may seem elementary, but you need one, preferably one where the URL (web address) is your own name or some close variation on your name. For example, my website is located at www.carlaeanderton.com . When it comes to websites, you can do it yourself or outsource the task, depending on your individual needs and skills. The steps to setting up a personal web site are fairly straightforward. PERSONAL WEBSITE Gypsy Rose Lee

PowerPoint Presentation:

Purchase a domain name. A simple internet search will reveal other sites where you can register domains. PERSONAL WEBSITE

PERSONAL WEB SITE, continued…:

PERSONAL WEB SITE, continued… Acquire a web host. Once you’ve purchased your domain, you need a server to store your web page(s). Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to buy server space from an individual or business that is local so if you run into issues, help is close at hand. PERSONAL WEBSITE

Nowadays, it seems like everyone is on Facebook. I’m going to assume everyone here knows how to set up a Facebook account. More relevant to my topic today, let’s talk about how a personal Facebook account can be used as a marketing tool. Establishing an identity via status updates, photos and “likes” Helping keep you “connected” to an audience, generally a fairly intimate audience Xaviera Hollander “The Happy Hooker”

PUBLIC FIGURE PAGE:

PUBLIC FIGURE PAGE There are times when you want to maintain some distance between yourself and your audience, or when you want to separate your personal FB presence from your professional one. Facebook allows you to create a page for your business or brand, which in this case is YOU, which you can then “use” Facebook as. Mary Jane Kelly “5 th Ripper Victim”

Seems like everyone’s all atwitter about Twitter. It functions similarly to Facebook in terms of personal marketing in that you can use it to: Establish an identity and let your audience know what you’re doing/thinking Connect to a broad audience/network of like minded people Alice Marot

PowerPoint Presentation:

Authoring a blog is a great way to let your audience get to know you and what you’re all about. A blog can either be a component of your personal web site or can be maintained separately using a service like Blogger or Word Press. Gypsy Rose Lee

As with any medium of expression, there are pitfalls that should be avoided. Some of the risks include: Oversharing, or sharing too much, too soon Sharing the wrong kind of information Attracting the wrong kind of attention SOCIAL MEDIA SNAFUS

Finally, in terms of global marketing, there are those experimenting with innovative means of establishing your most important brand, your name. A couple of examples include: Nell Gwynn “Mistress of King Charles II”

PowerPoint Presentation:

What is local marketing in terms of personal marketing? Local marketing is useful for establishing yourself in your own community/city/region or for establishing yourself in niche markets. Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman”

PowerPoint Presentation:

A common assumption is that newspapers only cover topics/people they deem “newsworthy”, when in truth reporters and editors are people like us and thus are not infallible. They don’t necessarily wait around for news to “happen” and you shouldn’t wait around for them to contact you. Chances are you, your work or even a group with which you are involved are doing or have done something newsworthy. Why wasn’t it reported it in your local paper then? Because YOU didn’t report it! Gypsy Rose Lee

PowerPoint Presentation:

Contacting the staff at a newspaper is generally as easy as sending an email with a press release attached. Even if the newspaper doesn’t contact you directly to “do a story”, often they will run your release verbatim. Beyond that, learn who the reporters are for your local newspapers and get to know them. Cultivate a relationship with them, and when you feel you’ve done or are going to do something “newsworthy”, let them know. Odds are in your favor that they’ll be more apt to cover it. Calamity Jane

PowerPoint Presentation:

Newspapers certainly aren’t the only approachable local media. Planning a reading/book signing? Call your local stations and offer to be interviewed on air. This is particularly effective if you have a local “public” or “college” station, and if the program you offer to “appear” on is related to some subject on which you are an “expert”. PowerPoint Presentation:

There’s a great scene in my favorite novel, American Psycho , where the characters compare business cards. The author uses the scene to drive home a point about class considerations and differences, but business cards are actually a great sales tool. BUSINESS CARDS Mary Jane Kelly “5 th Ripper Victim”

PowerPoint Presentation:

They’re small, lightweight, and they contain more information about you than is on your Social Security card or even your driver’s license. They can be printed fairly inexpensively using a service like VistaPrint or at your local Staples, or you can design and print them yourself at home. Make a handful of business cards your personal AMEX card and don’t leave home without them. BUSINESS CARDS Don’t leave home without them! Rahab “Biblical Prostitute”

PowerPoint Presentation:

Don’t discount the advantages of joining civic groups like Rotary or the Lions club or even of being involved in your church, should you have one. Groups like these help you build and establish networks, often networks that reach farther than just your local area. COMMUNITY GROUPS & CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS Pablo Picasso’s “The Prostitutes”

PowerPoint Presentation:

Again, it may seem elementary, but find a local writers’ group and join it. The contacts you’ll gain may prove invaluable if you find the right group. The same is true for reading circles. You’re a writer, get to know people who READ. WRITERS’ GROUPS & READING CIRCLES Madame de Pompadour “Chief Mistress of King Louis XV”
