The Internet is No Exception:

The Internet is No Exception Carla Briggs Cross 2011

You are not a pup! :

You are not a pup! You have lived long enough to know that you cannot always believe what people say.

For whatever reason, people do not always tell the truth.:

For whatever reason, people do not always tell the truth. Sometimes people : just plain lie. lie for a reas on unknown to others. lie in an atte mpt to scam others. lie to gain something fro m others . It is not pleasant, but it is true. Pe ople are not always honest.

Be Smart!:

Be Smart! The internet is no different than the world. It is filled with interesting, wonderful people who, unfortunately, must be careful to watch out for those that are not so wonderful. Be wise!

The Internet is NO different but... There is something odd about the internet:

The Internet is NO different but... There is something odd about the internet Because people are able to hide their true identities, some people behave in ways that they would not normally. Some people feel as though the internet is not a real “place” and that they can behave in any way they want.

The Internet World:

The Internet World Although the internet is not a physical space, it does exist. It is real and permanent. It is available to billions of people. It is a public place.

Be cautious about trusting what you see online:

Be cautious about trusting what you see online What is wonderful about the internet is that it allows everyone to be a publisher. It gives everyone a voice. What is wonderful about the Internet can also be something that is not so good. Anyone that so chooses, can pretend to be an expert.

You CANNOT believe everything that you read.:

You CANNOT believe everything that you read. Be sure to research rumors, information, and other news in more than one place. Make sure that the source of the information is a reliable, good source. Experts are accepted by many; find people and organizations that are accepted as experts by others.

Reliable Sources:

Reliable Sources Snopes which can be accessed at www.snopes.com is an excellent source. As the site states Snopes is, “the definitive Internet reference source for urban legends, folklore, myths, rumors, and misinformation.“ Since 1995, Barbara and David Mikkelson have been researching all sorts of misinformation and publishing the results of their investigations.

Cross-Referencing:

Cross-Referencing I f you hear news that seems questionable, check more than one reliable resource. Sources are reliable that have accepted experts on staff to provide and interpret information. Try to determine the motivation of the author. Does the information benefit him or her?

Don't spread rumors!:

Don't spread rumors! Just like in the real world, you build a reputation in the cyber world. By checking facts and correcting errors, you act as a responsible cyber citizen. Make a sincere attempt to verify information before passing it on or posting it. It is your responsibility.

On the internet you cannot always believe what you see! Photoshop and other similar programs perform what seem like miracles.:

It is great to be optimistic! However, if it seems too good to be true... it probably is!:
