Properties of Matter :Properties of Matter Chapter 2 - Matter

Physical Properties :Physical Properties What are some examples of physical properties? Shape Mass Color Volume Texture

Physical Properties :Physical Properties Physical properties can be observed without changing the identity of the substance.

Physical Properties can be observed or measured :Physical Properties can be observed or measured Your senses can be used to identify some basic physical properties. What are some of these?

Physical Properties can be observed or measured :Physical Properties can be observed or measured State is a physical property that you can observe. What are the three common states? Solid Liquid Gas

Physical Properties can be measured :Physical Properties can be measured Melting and boiling point can be measured. How would you describe melting point? How about boiling point?

Physical Properties can be measured :Physical Properties can be measured What are some other physical properties that can be measured? Strength Hardness Magnetism

What do physical properties determine? :What do physical properties determine? They determine uses for the item. Ex.-aluminum for foil, clean socks, clothes match, etc.

Density (Sound familiar?) :Density (Sound familiar?) Density is a measure of how much matter is contained in a certain volume of substance. Density = Mass/Volume Sounds like more 4-step word problems!

Chemical Properties :Chemical Properties A chemical property describes how a substance changes into a new substance, either by combining with other elements or by breaking apart into new substances.

Chemical Properties :Chemical Properties Chemical properties are usually not as easy to observe as physical properties. What is an example of a chemical property? Flammability and/or reactivity

Differences :Differences Chemical and physical properties are different. How? Can observe phys. properties w/out changing the identity of a substance. Can observe chemical properties only in situations in which the identity of the substance changes.
