PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistants) :

PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistants) Presented by Debbie Campbell January 16, 2011

Origin :

Origin PDA’s are handheld computers that were originally designed as organizers. The basic features included address, phone, calendar and task lists. Today, a PDA’s functions have grown to include cellular, fax, and internet use.

Types of PDA’s :

Types of PDA’s There are many types of PDA’s and most work with software such as Palmtop or Windows mobile. All models can interface with your personal computer. Synchronization between computer and PDA is one of the most popular features of this digital device.

Features :

Features PDA’s work with stylus pens while other have miniature keyboards. Some PDA’s are preinstalled with many software programs while others are optional. Software can include: Handwriting recognition Voice recognition Digital voice recorder Cellular functionality Wireless network capability

Other Features :

Other Features PDA’s can function like a computer and can include programs like excel and Microsoft word. With flash card capability you can store, access, and transfer virtually any kind of data, including maps, spreadsheets, or presentations.

Users of PDA’s :

Users of PDA’s In a 2009 Marist Poll it shows that by a margin of two-to-one, younger Americans are more likely to own PDA’s. 26% of those younger than 45 own them while only 10% older than 45 do. If you are employed the numbers rise to one-forth of Americans who own a PDA.

Implications for Schools :

Implications for Schools Whether it’s a PDA, cell phone, or iPad, the growth in hand held devices is phenomenal. PDA’s may not completely replace other technologies, but they can certainly address specific needs. Some applications allow students to use their device as a graphing calculator, word processor, database, test prep tool, and reference resource. One of biggest benefits of PDA’s is that they can be used in a classroom with only one computer. (No need to relocate to a computer lab) Students can then download their assignments to finish at home. Aspiring journalists in Berkeley, CA are using PDAs to conduct interviews for their school newspaper, and then promptly downloading their stories onto a desktop computer for editing. Teachers and administrators are using them for record keeping, scheduling, and other administrative details as well as teaching applications.

Other uses for students :

Other uses for students A student could take notes on a PDA and later transfer them to a laptop for further studying. A student who does not understand a math concept could find a podcast for further explanation. While reading about President Nixon a student could instantly access an article about Watergate online so he can add more to a discussion. The key to PDA’s is their portability. They can be great for field trips, and anything requiring quick information access and recording. In the classroom the possibilities are endless:

Future implication :

Future implication The use of handheld devices will be a valuable asset to students and teachers alike in future classrooms. These are just some of the assets: Paperless classroom EBooks instead of costly text books in classrooms Further mobility Increased engagement among teens Ease of taking work home

Final thought :

Final thought PDA’s are not the only hand-held device that we can use in schools and in classrooms. Whether it’s an iPad, or “blackberry” they are the wave of the future and a younger generation. To engage we must follow suit and adhere to this ever changing technological age.
