Premium member Presentation Transcript Graphite Pencil Techniques : Graphite Pencil Techniques Teacher: Beverly Chick General Pencil Rules : General Pencil Rules Don’t draw with blunt pencil tip Sharpen Pencil Tip works better Kneaded Eraser should be well-kneaded and soft before using Kneaded Eraser is used for special pencil techniques White Eraser works best for erasing Supplies Needed : Supplies Needed Soft Graphite Pencils (HB, 2B, 3B or 4B--Any combination) 50 to 80 Weight Drawing Paper 8 x 11 to 9 x 12 in size Kneaded Eraser White Eraser Pencil Sharpener Lines : Lines Dark & Light Lines Feathered/Tapered Lines Side of Pencil Lines & Patterns Dark & Light Lines : Dark & Light Lines One continuous movement Don’t lift pencil off paper Heavy pressure of pencil on paper, light pressure, etc. What This is Used For: To indicate dark shadow or light area without using tone To create interesting textures Feathered/Tapered Lines : Feathered/Tapered Lines One quick stroke Blunt at one end, feathered at the other Press pencil down hard, lift up quickly at end What This is Used For: To draw grass, branches, fur, hair Side of Pencil-Rolling : Side of Pencil-Rolling Place index finger on side of pencil Place side of pencil (not the tip) on paper Press pencil down hard, rolling it around with your finger Make random & free patterns. Not symmetrical patterns. Draw in connecting lines to look like branches. What This is Used For: Trees & Bushes Tone : Tone Graded Tone & Even Tone Manipulated Tone Graded Tone & Even Tone : Graded Tone & Even Tone Graded Tone: Dark, Middle and Light Tones Start Dark and Fade to Light Even Tone-All One Tone Apply same pressure (Pencil to Paper) Manipulating Tone : Manipulating Tone Smudge With Finger Kneaded Eraser Using medium-hard pressure, rub finger over pencil to smear it Automatically blends edges Pinch & reshape Kneaded Eraser to get different shapes Press down & drag reshaped Kneaded Eraser over graphite pencil Press (don’t rub) Eraser onto graphite pencil and lift off Lines & Tone : Lines & Tone Feathered/Tapered Lines & Tone Side of Pencil Lines & Tone : Lines & Tone Feathered/Tapered Line Combined With Tone Line should be darker than tone Good for grass, fur and hair Draw With Side of Pencil Has both line & tone in one stroke Hold pencil parallel to paper Must have long sharp tip Good for fences & shading Final Drawing Using all thesePencil Techniques : Final Drawing Using all thesePencil Techniques Can you identify what technique is used and where it is used in this drawing?
