Themes in the Giver :

Themes in the Giver Rules Sameness Choices Memory

Sameness :

Sameness In Jonas’s world everyone is equal and the same. In order to achieve “sameness” and security the people have sacrificed feeling, color, music, sensation, love and choice.

Slide 3:

Everyone has the same birthday. Everyone follows the same traditions. Everyone must follow the same rules. No one must really think for themselves. Sameness Imagine your world with sameness.

Slide 4:

This society makes almost all choices for the people. Their jobs, their spouses, even the children they have. Imagine your world with no choice. Choice

Slide 5:

The people in this community willingly gave up this freedom generations ago to have everyone equal and the same. Every aspect of life is carefully planned and decided by the community. Even the words they speak are carefully planned and monitored. Choice

Slide 6:

People cannot say or do anything that causes discomfort to another. Husbands and wives are matched by the Committee of Elders. Exactly two children are assigned to each family unit. Rules

Slide 7:

The elderly must live at the House of the Old. Newborn infants are nurtured at the Nurturing Center until they become Ones. Everyone must take pills to prevent “stirrings”. If a child does not meet the requirements it must be “released”. Rules

Slide 8:

People in Jonas’s community only have short term memory. No pain and hurt that routinely occur in human life. Nobody needs to remember the past. Memories

Slide 9:

Imagine your life without memories. Imagine human life without memories. How might history be different if no one had any memory of the past. Memories
