Slide 2:
When solving a compound inequality such as
-4 < x + 4 < 6,
you need to remember that you are solving TWO inequalities
at once.
Therefore, whatever you do to isolate the “x”, you must also
do to both sides of the equation. -4 < x + 4 < 6
-4 - 4 -4 -8 < x < 2 (-8, 2) - interval notation
Slide 3:
Given a compound inequality such as
2x + 1 < -2 OR 2x + 1 > 5
you must solve both equations separately. 2x + 1 < -2
- 1 -1 2x < -3
x < -3/2 2x + 1 > 5
- 1 -1 2x > 4
x > 2 Interval notation: (-, -3/2) OR (2, )
