Elements of Fiction The Giver by Lois Lowry

Author’s Purpose : 

Author’s Purpose The reason for creating a work. The purpose might be to explain or inform, entertain, persuade or reveal an important truth to the reader.

Characters : 

Characters A person, an animal, or an imaginary creature that takes the part in the main action of the story.

Point of View : 

Point of View The perspective or vantage point from which an author presents a story. 1st person -the story is told by one of the character’s in the story. The character uses pronouns like I and we. 3rd person -the story is told by the narrator who stands outside of the story and observes the events as they unfold. The narrator uses the pronouns she, he and they.

Plot : 

Plot Plot-the action or problem in the story. It is the sequence of events in a story. It is based on a key conflict.

5 Parts of the Plot : 

5 Parts of the Plot Exposition-the first part of the story. The author sets establishes the setting, introduces the characters and gives additional background information. Rising Action-the series of conflicts that build a story toward its climax Climax-the high point, or turning point of a story. It is the most intense point. Usually a decision is made that will decide the outcome of the conflict. Falling Action-the action that works out the decision arrived at during the climax. The conflict begins to be settles. Resolution-the ending. It brings the story to a close.

Conflict : 

Conflict 3 types: Man against man Main against himself Main against nature

Theme : 

Theme Theme-the statement about life the author wants to share with the reader. It is the life lesson the author is trying to get across.

Symbolism : 

Symbolism Symbolism -an image/object in a story that is used repeatedly and carries a deeper meaning. Some universal symbols include: water=purity black clouds=evil approaching heart=love

Characterization : 

Characterization Characterization: the techniques and author uses to develop the personality of a character in a story. Physical appearance and personality Speech, behavior and actions Thoughts and feelings (important in The Giver) Their interactions with other characters.

Types of Characters : 

Types of Characters Protagonist- the main character of the story that is most central to the action of the story. The one who will change, the one who will have to solve the problem. Antogonist-the person or thing working against the protagonist, or hero in the story.

Genre : 

Genre Genre-a category of literature Historical fiction Fantasy Science fiction Biography Realistic fiction Poetry Myths and legends Nonfiction Mystery Fables

Setting : 

Setting The time and place in which the actions occurs. Clues are usually found in the beginning of the story.
