Like many past tense constructions in English, it uses a helping verb to formulate the past. For now, we will look at verbs that require forms of avoir as the helping verb. Avoir : Avoir Review the present tense conjugation of avoir: J’ai Nous avons Tu as Vous avez Il, Elle, On a Ils, Elles ont Le Participe Passé : Le Participe Passé As in English, the past tense contains a past participle. In many English verbs, this is equivalent to verb forms ending in –ed. Past participles of French regular verbs are created using a formula. You must know the infinitives of regular verbs in order to form the passé composé. La Formation: -ER verbs : La Formation: -ER verbs -ER verbs form their past participle by cutting off the –er of the infinitive and adding -é: Examples: Manger=mangé Regarder=regardé Bronzer=bronzé La Formation: -IR verbs : La Formation: -IR verbs -IR verbs form their past participles by cutting off the –ir of the infinitive and adding -i. Examples: Choisir=choisi Finir=fini Applaudir=applaudi La Formation: -RE verbs : La Formation: -RE verbs -RE verbs form their past participles by cutting off the –re of the infinitive and adding -u. Examples: Rendre=rendu Attendre=attendu Perdre=perdu Le Passé Composé-ER : Le Passé Composé-ER The tense is created by using the appropriate present tense form of avoir + the past participle.The past participle will remain the same throughout the conjugation: J’ai dansé Nous avons dansé Tu as dansé Vous avez dansé Il a dansé Ils ont dansé Le Passé Composé-IR : Le Passé Composé-IR Rougir-to blush J’ai rougi Nous avons rougi Tu as rougi Vous avez rougi Il a rougi Ils ont rougi Elle a rougi Elles ont rougi On a rougi Le Passé Composé-RE : Le Passé Composé-RE Vendre-to sell J’ai vendu Nous avons vendu Tu as vendu Vous avez vendu Il a vendu Ils ont vendu Elle a vendu Elles ont vendu On a vendu La Négation : La Négation To make passé composé verbs negative, one puts ne…pas around the helping verb: Je n’ai pas fini Nous n’avons pas fini Tu n’as pas fini Vous n’avez pas fini Il n’a pas fini Ils n’ont pas fini L’interrogative : L’interrogative To create questions in the passé composé using inversion, one inverts the helping verb and the subject: As-tu fini tes devoirs? A-t-il nettoyé le garage? Ont-elles entendu la question? Négative/Interrogative : Négative/Interrogative To create a negative question, one puts the ne…pas around the inverted helping verb and subject. The past participle is always after the negative inversion. N’a-t-il pas retrouvé ses amis? N’avez-vous pas entendu la question? Translations : Translations Le Passé Composé is translated three ways in English: Simple past: I sold. = J’ai vendu. With have: I have sold. = J’ai vendu. With did: I did sell. = J’ai vendu.
