Song of the Open Road Notes Notes on the excerpt from Walt Whitman’s larger piece “Song of Myself”.

Structure : 

Structure This poem is an example of free verse. There is no specific meter or rhyme scheme. It does however have a lyrical, musical quality in an unstructured way.

Symbolism : 

Symbolism The road symbolizes freedom in this piece. The speaker talks about the road as if it has limitless possibilities, especially compared to the indoors.

Speaker : 

Speaker The speaker is obviously someone who is looking to make a change in his life. Someone is looking to gain more freedom and remove himself from the rat race.

Tone : 

Tone The tone is hopeful and joyous. There is a great deal of anticipation on the part of the speaker to begin the journey.
