Why do authors write? To entertain/to narrate : To entertain- to tell a story Often authors narrate a story to entertain their readers. The narrative can be fictional or non-fictional. To entertain/to narrate Entertain/Narrate Examples : Comics, Most fictional stories, Jokes, Many poems Diaries Journals Entertain/Narrate Examples To inform/instruct : To Inform- To tell you about a topic such as the Vietnam War, historical sites in Pennsylvania, or the 2009 Stanley Cup. Biographies or autobiographies are written to inform you about someone. Textbooks are written to instruct. You could use these writings to write a report or research paper. To inform/instruct Inform Examples : News reports Encyclopedias, Instructions, Pamphlets Maps, Timelines, Schedules, Charts or graphs Inform Examples To persuade : To persuade – to try to convince you to believe the way the author does or to do something the author wants you to do When an author is trying to be persuasive, he or she will use ideas, information, and/or emotions to influence you. Persuasive reading materials sometimes provide only one side to an argument. To persuade Persuade Examples : Advertisements, Newspaper editorials, Junk mail, Posters Persuade Examples To describe : To describe – give details An author will give you sensory details to help you to create a picture in your mind.
