Back To Our Roots :Back To Our Roots Root Words, Prefixes, and Suffixes

Root Words :Root Words Have you ever wondered how our words became words? At least half of the words that we use in the English language come from Greek or Latin ROOT WORDS.

Root Words :Root Words Root Words are base words. Learning common root words can help you find the meaning of unknown vocabulary words. Example: The root “geo” means earth, so words like ‘geology’ refer to earth (in this case, the study of earth)

Prefixes :Prefixes Prefixes are letters added to the front of a root word to change its meaning. For instance, if I add the prefix “sub” to a word, it changes the meaning of that word to mean below _____. Substandard, then, means below standard.

Suffixes :Suffixes Suffixes are letters added to the end of a root word to change its meaning. “ful” for example, is a suffix meaning “filled with.” The word ‘frightful’ means filled with fright.

Review :Review Learning the meanings of the most common root words, prefixes, and suffixes can help you figure out the meanings of many unknown vocabulary words.
