Poor eating habits play a big part in some serious health problems: Heart Disease High Blood Pressure Diabetes Some types of Cancer Good eating habits now can lower the risk of these problems later in life! Dietary Guidelines for Americans : Dietary Guidelines for Americans There are six ideas for making healthier food choices. They are: Eat a variety of foods Balance your eating with physical activity Choose a diet with plenty of grains, fruits and vegetables Choose a diet low in fat Choose a diet low in sugars Choose a diet low in salt Dietary Guidelines for Americans : Dietary Guidelines for Americans Remember, these suggestions consider all of the things you eat over time – not just in one day. But, the more often you follow them, the healthier your eating habits are. The Food Guide Pyramid : The Food Guide Pyramid The Food Guide Pyramid is an eating plan that tells you what you should eat each day. By following the Food Guide Pyramid, you will have made a big step toward following the Dietary Guidelines. Eat a Variety of Foods : Eat a Variety of Foods Within the Food Guide Pyramid are different food groups. If you eat the right amount of servings from each of those groups every day, you’ll be eating healthy. What Counts as a Serving? : What Counts as a Serving? Serving sizes are different for different types of foods. Many times our portion, or the amount of food we eat, is larger than a serving. A serving is the recommended amount of the food we should eat. For example, a serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards. Balance your Eating with Physical Activity : Balance your Eating with Physical Activity Part of eating healthy is balancing the amount of food you take in with exercise to burn it off. If you take in more than you burn, you will gain weight. If you burn more than you take in, you will lose weight. Choose a diet low in fat : Choose a diet low in fat Try these ideas to lower the fat in the foods you eat: Drink skim or low fat milk Eat less meat Cut off chicken and turkey skin Eat less high-fat junk foods like cookies, cakes and chips Eat frozen yogurt instead of ice cream Choose a Diet Low in Sugars : Choose a Diet Low in Sugars Try these ideas to lower the sugar in the foods you eat: Eat less sugary cereals for breakfast Try sugar-free gum Drink diet drinks or water Cut back on cakes, cookies and candy Choose a Diet Low in Salt : Choose a Diet Low in Salt Try these ideas to lower the salt in the foods you eat: Taste your food before you salt anything Don’t put the salt shaker on the table Cut back on salty snacks like chips and pretzels Cut back on packaged foods like canned soup and frozen pizza Something to Think About : Something to Think About Many packaged foods have more than one serving in them, even though people usually eat the whole package!
