Edit Comment Close Premium member Presentation Transcript Digestive System : Digestive System Digestion : Digestion Our body has to digest, or break down food before it can get the nutrients and energy it needs from what we eat. Your Mouth and Saliva : Your Mouth and Saliva Digestion begins in the mouth when we grind the food by chewing it, then our saliva (spit) helps make it soft and mushy and easier to swallow. Your Esophagus : Your Esophagus Your esophagus is a stretchy pipe that moves the food you eat from the back of the throat to your stomach. Your Stomach : Your Stomach At the end of your esophagus is your stomach. It has three important jobs: Store the food you have eaten. Break the food into a thick liquid. Empty the thick liquid into the small intestine. Your Small Intestine : Your Small Intestine The small intestine is a tube that is about 20 feet long. It is coiled and packed beneath your stomach. It breaks down the food from your stomach even further so your body can get all the nutrients out of it. Other Organs : Other Organs The small intestine needs help getting all of the nutrients out of the food. It gets that help from the gall bladder, the pancreas and the liver. Large Intestine : Large Intestine Everything that our body can’t use moves from the small intestine to the large intestine. There, extra water is absorbed from the waste and it becomes a solid. Last, but not Least : Last, but not Least When you go to the bathroom, you get rid of the solid waste. Yep, it’s poop! Take Care of Your Digestive System : Take Care of Your Digestive System It’s important to keep your digestive system in good shape. Here are some things you can do: Drink plenty of water. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. They have fiber which helps push the waste through your large intestine. Get plenty of exercise. That keeps your digestive system working well too. Something to Think About : Something to Think About When you burp, you just get rid of gas! When we eat and drink, we swallow air, too.
