Erosion :
Erosion Erosion is the process by which weathered rock and soil particles are moved from one place to another.
Erosion can be caused by gravity, wind, running water, glaciers and waves
Deposition:
Deposition The process by which sediments are laid down in new locations is called deposition
Along with erosion, deposition changes the shape of Earth’s surface.
Gravity:
Gravity Gravity pulls rocks and soil down slopes.
The downhill movement of sediments caused by gravity is called mass wasting
Examples of mass wasting are a land slide, mud flow and avalanches
Wind:
Wind Wind is one of the most active agents of erosion in deserts, in plowed fields and on beaches
2 types
Deflation- wind removes loose materials from the land
Abrasion- larger particles rolling along the ground, slowly wearing away exposed rocks
Deposits by wind:
Deposits by wind Sand dunes
A mound of sand deposited by wind
Plants and windbreak fences help to keep sand dunes in place Loess
Fine particles of sand and silt are deposited many km’s from where they were picked up
Light in color and may be many meters thick; very fertile
