Slide 2:
The Pythagorean Theorem is used to solve many real-world problems.
A ladder that is 13 feet long leans up against the side of a house.
The base of the ladder is 5 feet from the base of the house. How
high up the building does the ladder reach?
First, try to draw and label a diagram: Ladder = 13 house Ground = 5 Use the Pythagorean Theorem:
a2 + b2 = c2
52 + b2 = 132
25 + b2 = 169
b2 = 144
b = 12
The ladder rests 12 feet high on the
house.
Slide 3:
A plot of land is in the shape of a rectangle. The dimensions of
the plot are 6 meters by 8 meters. What is the measure of the
diagonal? 6 8 a2 + b2 = c2
66 + 82 = c2
36 + 64 = c2
100 = c2
C = 10
