Food Groups A lesson about the 6 food groups

Bread, Cereal, Rice & Pasta Group : 

Bread, Cereal, Rice & Pasta Group You should eat 6-9 servings from the bread, cereal, rice and pasta group every day. A serving from the bread, cereal, rice and pasta group could be: 1 slice of whole wheat bread 1 small bagel 2 medium tortillas ½ cup of cooked rice 1 cup of ready-to-eat cereal ½ cup of spaghetti Remember-a ½ cup serving is about the size of a tennis ball while a 1 cup serving is about the size of a softball.

Vegetable Group : 

Vegetable Group You should eat 3-4 servings from the vegetable group every day. A serving from the vegetable group could be: 1 cup of salad ½ cup of green beans ½ cup of corn ¾ cup of vegetable juice A ½ cup serving of vegetables is about the size of a tennis ball while a 1 cup serving is about the size of a softball.

Fruit Group : 

Fruit Group You should eat 2-3 servings from the fruit group every day. A serving from the fruit group could be: 1 medium banana, apple or orange 1 cup of grapes ½ cup of canned peaches, pears or fruit cocktail ¼ cup of raisins ¾ cup of 100 % fruit juice Remember-a ½ cup serving is about the size of a tennis ball while a 1 cup serving is about the size of a softball.

Milk, Yogurt & Cheese Group : 

Milk, Yogurt & Cheese Group You should eat 2-3 servings from the milk, yogurt and cheese group every day. A serving from the milk, yogurt and cheese group could be: 1 cup of milk or yogurt 1 slice of American, Swiss or provolone cheese ¼ cup of shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese ½ cup of low-fat pudding 2 ounces of string cheese Remember- a ½ cup serving is about the size of a tennis ball while a 1 cup serving is about the size of a softball.

Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs & Nuts Group : 

Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs & Nuts Group You should eat 2-3 servings from the meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts group every day. A serving from the meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts group could be: 2-3 ounces of lean meat, poultry or fish ½ cup of baked beans 2 tablespoons of peanut butter 1 egg A 2-3 ounce serving of lean meat, poultry or fish is about the size of a deck of cards.

Fats, Oils & Sweets Group : 

Fats, Oils & Sweets Group Try not to eat foods with lots of fats, oil and sugar. These foods give us calories but have very few vitamins or minerals. The fats, oils and sweets group of foods should only be eaten once in a while. All of the other food groups should be eaten every day.
