French and Indian War :

French and Indian War Training Ground for the Future

Several ways that the French and Indian War was a training ground for the future :

Several ways that the French and Indian War was a training ground for the future Tactics were learned and changed to better suit the opponent and the terrain. Leaders were developed and gained experience for the future

Difference in tactics :

Difference in tactics British/Colonist Military units traveled together and fought as a compact group Large frontal attacks Organized marching order Heavy Artillery Large supply trains Native American Travel in small groups Ambush Quick strikes and leave area Sustained themselves off the earth

Problems with Colonial/British Fighting Methods :

Problems with Colonial/British Fighting Methods Military units traveled together and fighting as a compact group made them vulnerable for ambushes (Braddock, Bushy Run); but after initial onslaught, they would regroup in a good defensive position to hold off foe until help arrived. Large frontal attacks only good if enemies stayed in one location. Organized marching order as a group left no worries to foes about reserves attacking when they ambushed main force. Heavy artillery and long supply trains slowed travel

Change in Tactics :

Change in Tactics Colonial forces in particular learned that the hit and run method was very successful. Built a series of forts (Forbes on his march from Philadelphia) to provide supplies and reinforcements when needed. Travelled without heavy artillery as forces they were fighting were not large groups (Bouquet and Bushy Run)

Leaders Who Gained Experience :

Leaders Who Gained Experience George Washington (military) Benjamin Franklin (political & military) Colonel John Armstrong (military)
