Mayers Director of Curriculum Blendedschools.net Memory’s CODE : Memory’s CODE Connect Organize Dual-Code Exercise and Elaborate The Strategic Teacher by Silver, Strong, Perinie, 2007 Slide 3: Connections Hook that helps students connect their experience and background to the lecture topic The Hook : The Hook Apply past knowledge to new situations is defined by Art Costa and Bena Kallick as a critical habit of mind (2008, 2009) The hook is the bait so that you can reel in your students’ minds Mastery hook – recall or repeat information Understanding hook – focusing on controversy Self-expression – imaginations, what if? Interpersonal hook – personal connection Kindling : Kindling Give students time to stop and think Allowing students time to jot down their initial ideas on paper Encouraging students to share their ideas organization : organization Present information in manageable chunks which students record on visual organizers Visual Organizers : Visual Organizers Structure the chunks of information that students will be expected to collect during the lecture Ask students to listen then say “stop the video and record what you hear, re-wind if you need to” Visual organizers create expectations about learning and about how new information will be experienced Developing anticipation that holds student attention Deeper processing : Deeper processing Lecturer uses a variety of techniques such as visual and physical aids, demonstrations, vivid imagery, processing activities, to make the content more memorable Dual-Coded : Dual-Coded Stored in multiple parts of each student’s memory This happens when students get an opportunity to process content in a variety of ways and senses Involve the Senses : Involve the Senses The more senses involved the deeper the engagement Descriptive text, add the details so they can visualize Use images, visual aids or physical aids that students can touch and feel Vary tone and level of emotion Exercise : Exercise Memories are like muscles, they develop with exercise. Stop and Question : Stop and Question Exercise and apply what they have learned Stop and question: 1 – 3 minutes for primary students 3 - 5 minutes for upper elementary 5 – 7 minutes for upper middle school and high school students Question Types : Question Types Synthesis : Synthesis Culminating task Remind students to revisit lecture notes and organizers – use them as a study guide Four Principles of Memory Based Lectures : Four Principles of Memory Based Lectures Streaming Your Video : Streaming Your Video Log into bsntube (login info is provided in the Developer’s Certification course). Click “Upload New Video” Complete the following: Title = Name of your video (not the unit and lesson number) Description = contains the course and unit/lesson # Tags = one key word or topic of your video Select a channel based on your subject area Skip the rest and click “Next” Use “Browse” button to select the video you have saved Click “Upload.” It takes a few minutes for your video to process and show up on BSNtube. Click the “Videos” button to find your video, it will be near the top when it has finished processing.
