GRC PROGRAM’S GOALS2009-2010 To increase the academic success of freshmen and other students in the high schools that are served. To engage students in exploring academic and career opportunities. To develop a plan with those targeted students to earn their high school diploma through credit recovery, credit acceleration, tutoring, study skills, etc. To counsel students with issues which may impede their academic success; and to provide referrals and resources for students and parents.

WHAT WE KNEW :

WHAT WE KNEW Drop-outs are a major problem in our school district The highest drop-out rate comes in the 9th grade Something needs to be done

WHAT WE FOUND OUT :

WHAT WE FOUND OUT High number of overage 9th graders Method of grading was penalizing students 7.0/8.0 credits causing high failure rate in 9th grade Truancy, absenteeism and behavior issues were of low priority in 9th grade Students did not move up at mid-term. Students in Grade 8 repeated all Grade 8 courses, even those they had passed Jefferson Parish requires students to have 28 credits to graduate instead of the state required 24. Need to improve transition activities from middle to high school.

Students now move up to the next grade level at mid-term(This allows students more attempts at the grade level GEE test) :

Students now move up to the next grade level at mid-term(This allows students more attempts at the grade level GEE test) Students are moved up at mid term with the following: 10 credits moved from Grade 9 to Grade 10 17 credits from Grade 10 to Grade 11 24 credits from Grade 11to Grade 12 (This is following JPPSS traditional PPP.) Students are moved up at mid term with the following: 8 credits moved from Grade 9 to Grade 10 16 credits from Grade 10 to Grade 11 20 credits from Grade 11to Grade 12 (This is following the JPPSS PPP, whereby students are currently enrolled in the current Grade Level English and math class.) Move Ups

Work in Progress . . . :

Work in Progress . . . Grade 8 repeaters not repeating courses they already passed in the previous year. Carnegie Units being earned by retained 8th Graders when feasible. Currently preparing to present a pilot program to have a Graduation Resource Counselor assigned to work with middle schools on “high school transition.”

More things we want to see done… :

More things we want to see done… Have JPPSS’s graduation requirements mirror those of the state for our non-magnet schools. Increase student attendance Get parents more involved Attain an 80% graduation rate by 2014 Utilize all diploma types to better serve our student populations.
