Internet Safety:

Internet Safety Regional Workshops for School Counselors, 2007 Presented by: Amanda Snobarger School Counselor Consultant Indiana Department of Education

The Rationale…:

The Rationale… Children have a 1 in 3,696,676 chance of being struck by lightening - but we still cancel Little League games. Children have a 1 in 3,717,984 chance of being poisoned at Halloween - but we still check their goodie bags. Children have a 1 in 5 chance of receiving unwanted sexual solicitations online.

The Relevance…:

The Relevance… Nearly one-third (29%) of students surveyed said their parent or guardian would disapprove if they knew what they were doing on the Internet. 64% percent of online teens say that most teens do things online that they wouldn't want their parents to know about. One-third (33%) of 13–17 year olds and nearly half (48%) of 16-17 year olds report that their parents or guardians know "very little" or "nothing" about what they do on the Internet. ONDCP

The Circumstances…:

The Circumstances… Just under half (42%) of parents do not review the content of what their teenager(s) read and/or type in chat rooms or via instant messaging. 30% percent of parents allow their teenagers to use the computer in private areas of the house, such as a bedroom or home office. More than one in five (22%) 13–17 year olds said their parents or guardians have never discussed Internet safety with them.
