Journey North connections/communication: 

Journey North connections/communication Journey North is a website that studies and reports on animal migrations, including the annual migration of the Monarch butterflies to Mexico from the United States and Canada.

Symbolic Migration: 

Symbolic Migration Each fall students from the United States and Canada create paper butterflies with messages in Spanish and send them to Journey North.

Symbolic Migration: 

Symbolic Migration Journey North forwards them to children who live near the butterfly sanctuary in Mexico. In the spring the paper butterflies return to the U.S. just as the real butterflies do.

You’ve got mail!: 

You’ve got mail! In the spring we received a packet of butterflies from other students in the U.S. Then we began to receive letters from children around the country who had received our butterflies.

Maps: 

Maps During the migration periods in the fall and spring the website is updated each Friday with maps showing the latest sightings. My students were able to track the migration using their own maps.

Challenge Questions: 

Challenge Questions The website provides new information about Monarchs each week. Scientists in the field pose a weekly challenge question that your class can answer.

How do I get started?: 

How do I get started? Register your class at the Journey North website. Download the checklist for the fall migration. Have your students make butterflies. Mail the butterflies by the deadline. (This year’s deadline was October 13th.)
