1910 : 

1910 A group of local animal lovers incorporate as The Frederick County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Early Activities : 

Early Activities In the 1920s, the Society joins humane groups across the country to raise awareness about Vivisection. In 1924, the Society launches the first “Be Kind to Animals” week in Frederick.

Our first shelter : 

Our first shelter In 1953, the Society receives permission from the city and county to equip a small building on Gas House Pike as an animal shelter.

Over the Years : 

Over the Years 1958: We change our name to The Frederick County Humane Society 1975: First newsletter is distributed to membership and supporters. 1976: Plans are approved to build a new, larger shelter on Rosemont Avenue.

1977 : 

1977 FCHS contributes $65,000 to the County to build the shelter, about 1/3 the cost.

1986: FCHS Board enters into agreement with area vets to donate services to the shelter. 1987: Local TV program “Making Friends” debuts on Cable 10, featuring animals available for adoption at the shelter.

1989: Humane Education program initiated for area school children. 1990: FCHS donates $46,000 for shelter expansion. 1993: FCHS holds a Candlelight Vigil at City Hall on behalf of animal welfare.

1994: 1st annual Walk-N-Wag event in Baker Park! 1996: Website launch, www.fchs.org

1996: The first Quick Fix for neutering male cats, $5 each. 1997: FCHS launches POP, low/cost spay neuter voucher program.

2000: FCHS adds dog and puppy positive reinforcement training to its programs. 2001: County decides not to renew contract. FCHS moves out of shelter and into space on Industry Lane.

2004: FCHS collaborates with The Downtown Frederick Partnership to offer first annual Dog Days of Summer event.

2005: FCHS partners with Friends for Life Animal Rescue to safely transport 35 dogs from Hurricane Katrina to Frederick to receive critical medical attention and enter new loving homes.

2006: Pet Bereavement sessions now offered monthly. 2007: Rabies/Microchip clinics now offered quarterly. 2008: FCHS moves to its current location at 217 West Patrick St., downtown Frederick.

Our Emergency Pet Food bank serves average of 65 families/monthly, thanks to local community pet food drives.

In partnership with Two Paws Up! FCHS offers a Holiday Giving Tree, providing families with needed pet supplies, toys and food.
