House of Mercy Children’s Home Lagos, Nigeria :

House of Mercy Children’s Home Lagos, Nigeria A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child - Forest E. Witcraft

Outreach Programme to Homeless Street Children :

Outreach Programme to Homeless Street Children House of Mercy Children’s Home is dedicated to helping street children off the streets and back on the road to meaningful and productive lives.   We believe that if we feed and clothe homeless street children but fail to help them to develop healthy means of coping with the trauma they have experienced, we do little to help them over the long haul. As with all our work, our aim is to develop practical, long-term solutions that give the children the proper direction to a better future.

Outreach Programme to Child Scavengers :

Outreach Programme to Child Scavengers House of Mercy Children’s Home reaches out to children who scavenge through garbage dumps for food and material to build shelter and provides them with emergency medical care, drug counselling and friendship. We see our outreach programme as a project that can free these children from the life they are leading on the street.

Mobile Kitchen :

Mobile Kitchen House of Mercy Children’s Home has also been providing homeless street children with two meals a week. Our mobile kitchen provides free meals to about 150 children twice a week. The food is nutritious, providing a higher level of protein and vitamins than the children would normally receive.

Mobile School for Child Street Beggars :

Mobile School for Child Street Beggars Travelling through the streets of Oko Oba in Ebute Meta, Lagos, our mobile school project takes education to the doorstep of the poor and the marginalised. The neighbourhood is home to a large number of Muslim migrants, disabled people and beggars living in squatter settlements. Some of the children are not homeless street children but they have parents who, because of illness or misfortune, cannot support their families. As many as 200 children and teenagers have benefited from our school-on-wheels programme that commenced in 2007.

From Mobile School to Classrooms :

From Mobile School to Classrooms Located in Ebute Meta, Lagos, House of Mercy School serves about 300 children of disabled people and beggars living at the Oko Baba Destitute camp. The school is located right in the middle of the beggar’s and disabled persons camp, a place where lepers were once confined. Children are taught in English and in Hausa their native language. We also teach the children using educational videos and games. We educate about 300 children and about 200 attend classes regularly.

House of Mercy School :

House of Mercy School We encourage equal educational opportunities and fifty-five percent of the students are young girls. All the children work extremely hard and have dreams for a brighter future.   Children are prepared and encouraged to enter into the regular government educational system. Of the 200 students that attend House of Mercy School, 20 enrolled in formal education system in the 2008-2009 academic school year. Students who attend House of Mercy School stand out among their peers in formal education system.

House of Mercy School :

House of Mercy School Clothing We provide clothing for children who come to school without clothes. Medical Care The HOM Coordinator is trained in primary health care. If medical care is needed, HOM provides adequate care as necessary. Volunteers HOM has been fortunate to have proprietors of private schools and trained teachers who volunteer to teach the children once a week.

House of Mercy School Staff :

House of Mercy School Staff The 2008-2009 school year has been a fulfilling experience for the staff of House of Mercy Children’s Home. From the first day of school when the children started in the new school year, we had exciting moments observing the children growing in their thirst for learning and knowledge. Witnessing the growth of our students and dedication to themselves has been heart-warming and encourages us to continue our mission at the Oko Baba Destitute Camp in Ebute Meta, Lagos
