1. Eutrophication :
1. Eutrophication Causes:
Caused by high input of plant nutrients washed off from farms, animal wastes, detergents and human sewage, the nitrates and phosphates contained in these materials serve as food for the algae in the water. (there is excessive growth of aquatic plants)
Effects: :
Effects: Suffocate and deprive plants below of the sunlight needed for photosynthesis.
2. Thermal Pollution :
2. Thermal Pollution Causes:
Additional of abnormal and undesirable amount of heat to water, causing harmful effects on the aquatic life.
Effects:
Drastic increase of water temperature would decrease the level of dissolved oxygen used by aquatic organisms which may lead to suffocation and death of these organisms.
3. Ocean Pollution :
3. Ocean Pollution Causes:
Accumulation of non-biodegradable materials and other synthetic waste products dumped in the ocean.
Effects:
Kills aquatic life
Residues of toxic substances in water are absorbed by fishes and passed on through the food chain called biological magnification
4. Sedimentation :
4. Sedimentation Causes:
Soil erosion – extensive logging, kaingin system , shifting of land use.
Effects:
Destruction of mangroves and coral reefs areas which serve as breeding grounds for fishes and other aquatic organisms.
Low fish yield.
5. Red Tide :
5. Red Tide Cause:
Dinoflagellates thrive best on highly contaminated water that have slow current.
Effect:
Detritus feeders such as clams, mussels and fishes absorb red tide poison and pass this on to humans when they are consumed.
Threat to the general public and tremendous economic losses to the fishing industry.
