Notes 1. When Germany surrendered at the end of World War I, the Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to pay for all of the war damages. 2. Because it had to pay back so much money, Germany and its citizens became very impoverished and suffered great humiliation. 3. Germany was also hit by the Great Depression , making German citizens even poorer.

Hitler gave speeches blaming Jews, minorities, and gays for Germany’s problems. 6. Hitler became very popular with the German people, and in 1933 the German people elected Hitler to power.
