Electoral Mess!! :

Electoral Mess!! What is the Electoral College? Why did military Reconstruction end in the South?

Do Now :

Do Now 2000 Presidential Election: Popular vote

Notes :

Notes 1. The person who gets the most votes in a presidential election does not always win! 2. Presidential elections are decided in the Electoral College 3. The Electoral College is not a learning institution.

Notes :

Notes 4. Whichever candidate wins a state gets a certain number of electors (votes). 5. A candidate needs to get 270 electoral votes to win the election.

Notes :

Notes 6. So, if New York has 36 electoral college votes, and 10,000,001 people vote for Barack Obama but 10,000,000 vote for John McCain, Obama gets all 36 votes. 7. Sometimes, presidents can win in the popular vote but not get the presidency. 36 votes

Notes :

Notes 8. In 1876, the Republicans made a deal with the Democrats to let Hayes, a Republican, be president even though he did not win the popular vote.

Slide 8:

Both parties are fighting about who won!! How can we solve this?

Slide 9:

9. Even though Hayes did not win the popular vote, the Democrats agreed to let him become President if the Republicans agreed to make the military leave the South. OK, Tilden. I know that you actually got more votes than me, but I won more electoral votes. I think… We’re not sure that you won yet! We need to count the votes in Florida again. Unless you can help out my party a little… We just want to keep power. Let’s just end this thing! What do you want?? Get the military out of the Southern states and let us rebuild our way. If you do that, we will leave you alone about the recount. It’s a deal!! We will let the South take control of its own states again. Just make sure you follow all the new amendments… Yea, sure. Whatever….

Slide 10:

Why do you think this cartoon shows the Compromise of 1877 as handing over weapons to the South?
