The grahas and the planets – The differences in the basic thinking B.P.HARI CHANDRA ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR Department of Mechanical Engineering, M.S.Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore. || SARVAEBHAVANTHU SUKHINAHA || JYOTHI JYOTHISHA SAMVADA THRISSUR

There are nine planets in the solar system…:

There are nine planets in the solar system… About 25 years back in schools we were taught that there are 9 planets in the solar system.

There are nine planets in the solar system…:

There are nine planets in the solar system… Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto

The navagraha shloka…:

The navagraha shloka … However, on the other side, we have the Navagraha shloka recited commonly…..

The navagraha shloka:

The navagraha shloka Om namah suryaya chandraya mangalaya bhudhayacha guru shukra shanibhyascha rahave kethave namaha

The nine planets and grahas……:

The nine planets and grahas …… Planets (Planetary system) Grahas ( Navagraha system) Mercury 1 Surya Venus 2 Chandra Earth 3 Mangala Mars 4 Budha Jupiter 5 Guru Saturn 6 Shukra Uranus 7 Shani Neptune 8 Rahu Pluto 9 Ketu

A common argument raised:

A common argument raised Surya is a planet? (It is a sun) Chandra is a planet? (It is a satellite) Rahu and ketu are planets? (They do not have any existence at all)

In quest of finding the difference….:

In quest of finding the difference…. This presentation , “The grahas and the planets – The differences in the basic thinking” is aimed at

The nine planets and grahas compared:

The nine planets and grahas compared Planetary system Navagraha system ?? Surya ?? Chandra Mercury Budha Venus Shukra Earth ?? Mars Mangala Jupiter Guru Saturn Shani Uranus ? Neptune ? Pluto ? ?? Rahu ?? Ketu

What is the difference ?:

What is the difference ? The clue….. Today the school students are taught about not nine planets, but….. …. are taught that ….. …. there are eight planets in the solar system Pluto is left out today saying that it is not under the control of the sun Thus…..

There are EIGHT planets in the solar system:

There are EIGHT planets in the solar system Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto

TWO possible reasons:

TWO possible reasons The understanding about the planets has improved 25 years back also pluto might out of control of the sun, which is understood only now. Pluto is now ACTUALLY out of the control of the sun

More possibilites:

More possibilites There are possibilities that tomorrow Neptune will be dropped from the list Further, day after, Uranus may also be dropped from the list And so on, since it is a natural phenomenon that the planets over time go out of control

So, what are planets?:

So, what are planets? Planets are those celestial bodies Revolving around the sun In a plane & Under the control of the sun

What are grahas?:

What are grahas ? Grahas are those sources of energies from the celestial bodies whose presence and mutual positions have effect on the state of the energy on the earth.

The differences:

The differences Planetary system Navagraha system Based on modern science thoughts Based on Vedic thoughts Matter based Energy based Heliocentric (Sun as centre) Geocentric (Earth as receiver of energy)

The differences:

The differences Planetary system Navagraha system Sun Surya (Energy of the sun) If somebody were to picturize or sketch the sun (a celestial body clearly visible in the sky), a simple circle would have been sufficient. Surya being energy of the sun, description of the sunlight is not just a simple circle. This further clarifies the concept of graha . Similarly, other grahas also.

The differences:

The differences Planetary system Navagraha system Moon Chandra (Energy of the moon) Mercury Budha (Energy of Mercury) Venus Shukra (Energy of Venus) Mars Mangala (Energy of Mars) Jupiter Guru (Energy of Jupiter) Saturn Shani (Energy of Saturn)

Solar system – Human body analogy:

Solar system – Human body analogy Human body = Miniature solar system Solar system = Brahmanda Human body = Pindanda

PowerPoint Presentation:

Navagraha system Human body Surya Soul Chandra Mind Mangala Agni (Energy of the body) Budha Intellect (Decision making) Guru Wisdom Shukra Rayee ( Veerya & Anda ) Shani Controller of nervous system

PowerPoint Presentation:

Navagraha system Human body Rahu ; Chaayagraha Obstruction to flow of SOLAR prana A state during meditation Obstruction to the flow of energy of soul

PowerPoint Presentation:

Navagraha system Human body Ketu ; Chaayaagraha Obstruction to flow of LUNAR prana A state during meditation Obstruction in flow of energy of the mind

Conclusion:

Conclusion Planets and grahas are two altogethor different concepts It is wrong to use the word planet in the name of Englishizing the word graha Similarly it is wrong to equalize the various planets to various grahas as being practiced now; ex. Budha ≠ Mercury There is no equivalent word in English Dictionary for grahas.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Hence a graha to be addressed as graha itself, and never as planet.
