Paranormal (just Ghosts) :

Paranormal (just Ghosts) This MASTERPIECE was made by: Julie, Russ, Lacey, and Logan!!!!

The Father of Modern Paranormalism :

The Father of Modern Paranormalism Charles Fort (1874-1932) Has as many as 40,000 notes on unexplained experiences Was the first person to explain strange human appearances and disappearances He often reported strange things found in unlikely locations (wheels of light in the ocean, UFOs, fall of frogs, etc.)

Scientifical Explanation of Paranormal Activity :

Unusual experiences that lack a scientific explanation Said to be outside science’s ability to explain Scientific evidence doesn’t support paranormal beliefs Research is hard because of the lack of physical evidence Scientifical Explanation of Paranormal Activity

When does it happen? :

Some believe that hauntings only happen at night, but ghosts are known to appear throughout the day. 3 AM known as Dead Time or the Witching hour is believed as the most vigorous time of ghost activity. A theory of why is Jesus died at 3 PM and 3 AM is the opposite and they think, for this reason, it is the preferred time of paranormal activity. When does it happen?

Types of Hauntings: :

Intelligent Residual Inhuman Types of Hauntings:

Intelligent Hauntings: :

Intelligent hauntings involve activity and communication with “thinking” spirits Examples: shadow figures and apparitions A shadow figure is a ghost that is usually reported to be two feet in length and usually tend to travel two to ten feet in height. They are usually spotted out of the corner of your eye as they are darting through a wall. An apparition is a transparent human form of spirits that are normally faint and disfigured wearing clothing from the time frame they passed. Intelligent Hauntings:

Apparitions and shadows: :

Apparitions and shadows:

Residual hauntings: :

Residual hauntings are caused by residual energy that replays itself in a historical recording. There is no conscious interaction between spirits and humans Examples: Evp’s, ectoplasm, and orbs. Ectoplasm is a mist of fog that usually displays a swirl effect within a vaporous cloud. It is believed to be the soul of spirit of someone that has passed from this life. Orbs are transparent or translucent balls of light hovering above the ground. They are believed to be the traveling vessels of spirits or spirits of nature Residual hauntings:

Inhuman hauntings: :

Inhuman hauntings are paranormal infestations attributed to demons, elemental/non human spirits, or poltergeists Examples: slamming doors, flying objects, and possessions. Inhuman hauntings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlP2O-jL7qk “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”- 6 names

Reasons believed for hauntings: :

Unfinished business, the spirit feels that he/she has something important to accomplish before moving on An attachment to another person the spirit is unwilling to leave this plane of existence because of his or her love for another A material attachment, the spirit is unwilling to leave earthy possessions Protector: the spirit feels it is necessary to remain as a guardian over another Confusion: the spirit may have had an unexpected traumatic death and is unaware that he or she is now on the other side Reasons believed for hauntings:

Tools used to capture paranormal activity :

Cameras- infrared for night vision and thermographied cameras to detect heat/energy, digital, video, and 35mm cameras Digital audio recorders: used to document all sounds during an investigation for later review White noise generators: used to create random sounds that parapsychologists believe spirits might use to reorganize into coherent words aka electronic voice phenomena Tools used to capture paranormal activity

Slide 13:

EMF detector: measures common electromagnetic radiation levels, and is believed to measure those same fields when emitted by a spirit Digital thermometers: used to track sudden temperature changes that might indicate paranormal activity

Slide 14:

On a 67 degree night the thermometer showed:

Slide 15:

GPS: global positioning system; most recently used to map out locations displaying paranormal activity Computers: used to review digital material gathered and analyze potential evidence of the paranormal

Our paranormal investigation: :

We contacted Botetourt Paranormal and we went on investigations with them. They showed us how to conduct an investigation. We could’ve never done it without them. We went to two buildings that Jim Schaal runs: the Kyle House in Fincastle and the old Oakey’s Funeral Home on Campbell Ave which is now known as Schaal’s on Campbell Our paranormal investigation:

The Kyle House: :

At the Kyle House in Fincastle, we experienced many different things. We took pictures and took EVP recordings. The first time we went, we were there for an hour and sat quietly on the third floor where it is said to have the most paranormal activity. Later on when we were listening to the recordings, we heard a man, a woman, and what sounding to be like a young girl. When we went a second time, we didn’t sit around quietly. There was 7 of us all running around the house. When we would all stand still it sounded like things were still moving around and you could hear footsteps. We thought we stirred up the ghosts and they were roaming around the house. About 30 minutes before we left, the downstairs kitchen door beeped open and everyone was together, after that we didn’t hear anymore sounds and we didn’t have anything else on our recordings. The Kyle House:

Schaal’s on Campbell: :

We didn’t have much activity when we were downtown We took pictures and had tons of orbs in there, we also took an EVP recording We also went there two separate times. The first time we went we heard on the recording a man tell us to get out, a little boy said a few things, and we heard a woman laughing. The second time we went we got even less activity. We heard the woman laugh again, the boy said a few things, and it sounded like the man asked for help. Schaal’s on Campbell used to be an Old Oakey’s funeral home, there isn’t much history on it. It is now ran as an Event Hall for events of Schaal’s Catering. Schaal’s on Campbell:

History on the Kyle House: :

The house was built in 1830 by a man named Robert Kyle. Robert Kyle and James McDowell Sr. were friends, in 1833 James bought the house from Robert. James married Elizabeth Ferguson on December 10, 1829. They had 3 kids: William Kyle McDowell who was born in 1832. James McDowell Jr was born in 1834 Virginia McDowell was born in 1837 History on the Kyle House:

Slide 20:

James McDowell Jr married Nannie Turner and they had 7 kids. Turner McDowell(1866), Eliza(1868), Virginia(1870), James III(1872), William(1874), Nannie(1877), and Norman(1879) Elizabeth McDowell died November 30, 1857; her husband James Sr. died August 27, 1858 When Robert Kyle owned the house, it was operated as an Irish Linen store. When the McDowells’ had it, it was operated as a hotel. It was known as Central Hotel In 1914, Turner McDowell sold it to F.D. Bolton, who owned it until 1988 and ran it as a general store

Slide 21:

I asked some people around Fincastle the stories surrounding the house. Sean and Susan from Botetourt Paranormal told me Mrs. McDowell had a mental disorder and her husband locked her in her room. Which is the room on the right on the third floor of the house. A woman from the Fincastle library told me that Mr. McDowell killed his wife because of her disorder. I was not able to find out which McDowell is the woman haunting the building. The Kyle House is now ran as an event hall or a location for a wedding and reception.

Folklore around the Roanoke area: :

In Bedford it is said that you can see a partially see through man clothed as the skipper of a boat. He has been seen on many occasions guzzling a soda by a Bedford lookout tower In Roanoke, a man said he was driving over the Roanoke River bridge on the parkway around 3am. He saw a woman standing there, he stopped to she if she needed help, she walked toward the car and then vanished. Story says a lady was murdered and her body was left under the bridge. Two people have committed suicide on the same bridge the man saw her. Folklore around the Roanoke area:

Slide 23:

In Salem, it is said that a mother rushed out of her house to buy Christmas presents and she forgot her son. When she realized what she had done, she rushed back to her house. She expected her son to be in tears, but he was in the kitchen drinking a glass of chocolate milk. When she asked how he got the milk, he said that a nice old lady said his mommy would be home soon and she got him a glass of milk. He told the police that he could see through her and she looked like the lady in the picture in the attic- a woman who lived there in the 1920’s.
