Setting:
Setting This story took place in Berlin, Germany during 1942. The little boy, Bruno, called the concentration camp a “farm” when moving away from what he once knew as home. “Mum, what’s going on” - Bruno
Character:
Character Main characters : Bruno- A curious nine-year old boy who is finding out on his own what is really going on at the “farm.” Shmuel- The Jewish boy on the concentration camp that Bruno met around the same age as him. Bruno & Shmuel’s conversation : Bruno : Why do you wear pajamas all day? Shmuel : The soldiers. They took all our clothes away. Bruno : My dad's a soldier, but not the sort that takes people's clothes away. Secondary characters : Elsa- Bruno’s mother Ralph- Bruno’s father Gretel- Bruno’s sister
Plot:
Plot The action of this movie was when Bruno went on the other side of the fence. Also when he goes to look for Shmuel’s dad and goes to the gas chamber. The conflict was the Nazi’s fighting the Jews and Americans. The climax is Bruno helping Shmuel find his father and when he is questioned about it by the solders he denies it. The conclusion is Bruno dying at the end and then all the suspense is over.
Theme:
Theme The theme in this movie is that no matter how bad a situation is, you can be in denial by not wanting it to be what it really is. I say this because Bruno’s family lived right next to the concentration camp but they were denying what was really going on. Bruno to Shumel: “Were not supposed to be friends, you and me. Were meant to be enemies. Did you know that?” Bruno: It could be worse than it looks. Father: Im a solider. Soldiers fight a war. Mother: Thats not war! Father: Its a vital part of it!
Critics:
Critics Reading reviews on the internet about “the boy in the striped pajamas”, I didn’t read too many negative comments about this movie. The lowest I seen was 7/10 stars which is not too bad. I enjoyed this movie a lot myself and it didn’t hurt that I was interested in the Holocaust theme.
