Mormons The Church of Jesus Christ of Letter-Day Saints Over 15,000 men, women and children took the journey in the 1840s Led by Brigham YoungTheir Motivation: Their Motivation Escape persecution Religion originally had a few characteristics different than most other religions Property owned by the community Men could have more than one wife These are not a part of this religion today! Their leader Joseph Smith was murdered! By a mob in Illinois They needed to flee to practice freely They settled in Utah Settlement grew over timeBig Reason #2: Big Reason #2 Get Rich or Die Tryin ’ Plenty of land Plentiful resources And maybe even gold!1849 the Gold Rush: 18 49 the Gold Rush Gold was found in California in 1848 More than 80,000 people made the journey to California by the next year They were called forty-niners (year) Immigrants included Americans Europeans Australians South Americans Chinese This made California a very diverse place!!Gold Rush: Gold Rush Early on it was very simple w/ gold near the surface You could dig it out with a knife! Eventually it becomes more difficult and less profitable Gold still was scarce! Very few people got rich Most went broke trying to get rich Nevertheless, it created large populations and new issued needed to be examined Crime and vigilantismMSQ: MSQ Why did Mormons move westward?
