Background America continued to gain territory away from the East Coast Treaty of Paris Louisiana Purchase One big problem existed! How do we get there?!? Transportation was poor!

Land Travel in the Early 1800s Characteristics of many roads: Wide enough for a single wagon Steep banks on the sides Streams running throughout Sometimes stumps in the middle of them In short, many roads were not good for traveling!
Turnpikes:
Turnpikes Turnpikes Maintained by private companies At various points, people needed to pay to use them
Corduroy Roads :
Corduroy Roads Made in swampy areas Created with logs Kept wagons from sinking into mud, but… They were very bumpy! Railroads needed, but not ready yet!
