Learning Target I can identify the result of the early battles for New York and explain how it affected the morale of the Continental Army.

Recap : 

Recap Colonists angry at Britain Taxes Intolerable Acts Rebellion gets serious L & C Battle for Boston Rebellion turns to war Continental Congress writes the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson was the main writer Which leads us to Britain’s new plan of attack!! Attack the Middle Colonies to separate New England from the rest of the colonies!

Focus Questions What provides an army/navy with advantages when it comes to a battle? More soldiers/boats Better trained soldiers Better weapons Which side do you think had those advantages, the British or the Colonists?

Battle of Long Island : 

Battle of Long Island British 34,000 well-trained troops 10,000 sailors A navy large enough that one colonist said, “I could not believe my eyes….I thought all London was afloat” Continental Army 20,000 poorly-trained troops 0 sailors A navy so small that Super Wilson said, “Wow you have no chance in this battle!”

End Result 1,400 American troops lost Killed, wounded, captured Continental Army retreated to Manhattan They were followed by the British Damaged the morale of the Continental Army We will discuss morale soon!
