The Effects of Burning Fossil Fuels :

The Effects of Burning Fossil Fuels By: Brenton Miller Picture: www.gexcon.com

Do you know what causes this? Picture: www.stanford.edu Picture:Thedailygreen.com

Those were caused by the effects ofburning fossilfuels :

Those were caused by the effects ofburning fossilfuels Why do we do it? How does it affect us? Is there a way to fix it? But…

Research Abstract :

Research Abstract The purpose of my research is to identify the effects of the United States using fossil fuels as its major source of energy. I wanted to research this topic because I want to show how fossil fuels are hurting the environment. I also want to show some of the major types of alternative energies that are out there.

Fossil Fuels :

Fossil Fuels The 3 types of fossil fuels are coal, oil, and natural gas. We use them to heat our homes, power our cars, and generate electricity.(“Fossil Fuels”) Fossil fuels were formed millions of years ago by animal and plant remains. Oil is formed under the sea by marine life. This occurs when these remains get buried by layers of soil and are compacted by the extreme pressure.(Morgan 4) Picture: stockpreacher.com

Fossil Fuels Continued :

Fossil Fuels Continued These fuels are brought out of the ground by drills that are several miles long. Getting electrical energy out of fossil fuels is a pretty simple task. First, the fossil fuels are burned to boil water. Then, the steam that rises from the water turns turbines that are connected to huge generators.(Morgan 7-10) Picture: www.bizaims.com

Fossil Fuel Statistics :

Fossil Fuel Statistics The U.S consumes 17 million barrels of oil a day. The U.S is home to 5% of the world’s population, but we consume 26% of the world’s energy. 90% of our energy comes from fossil fuels. 60% of our nation’s electrical power comes from burning coal.(“Fossil Fuels”)

Negative effects of fossil fuels :

Global Warming :

Global Warming When carbon dioxide is released from fossil fuels they rise to the atmosphere. This layer of co2 keeps heat from escaping from the Earth which causes global warming. (Morgan) With global warming huge glaciers melt which raise the sea level. This could then put costal cities under water. Global warming also causes important crops such as corn or wheat to die. Acid Rain and Smog :

Acid Rain and Smog The burning of fossil fuels also causes acid rain and smog. Acid rain occurs when sulfur oxide and nitrous oxide react with water in the air. Acid rain cause erosion of buildings and statues. Smog occurs when fossil fuels release nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and ozone that react with sunlight to cause a haze in the air. Smog causes many to have trouble breathing.(Morgan) Picture: www.raphaelvarieras.com

Economic problems that deal with fossil fuels :

Economic problems that deal with fossil fuels We spend about 700 billion to 1 trillion dollars a year of fossil fuels. The dependence on fossil fuels are becoming extremely expensive for the the citizens of the United States and they are causing our value dollars to go overseas and out of our already weakened economy. For every dollar a citizen spends 10 cents of it goes for buying energy from fossil fuels. We cannot afford to wait to break from fossil fuels The time to act is now!!!!!!(“New Energy Future Reports”)

In order to break away from fossil fuels we need to start using alternative energies. :

Wind Energy :

Wind Energy There are two types of wind turbines, horizontal and vertical axis. How it works Monitors on the wind turbine measure wind speed and direction and this info is then used to angle the blades and move the whole wind turbine. This occurs so the maximum amount of electricity can be produced. Pros Wind energy is non-polluting, renewable, and it is very efficient. (Morgan19-24) Picture: sigmaconsultingeng.com

Hydroelectric Dams :

Hydroelectric Dams Most Hydro plants are built into into dams. How it works When a waterway is dammed water is stored to be released through pipelines. The water falls from the height of the dam which spin turbines to create energy. Pros Hydroelectric dams provide recreation such as fishing and it is also a non-polluting, and renewable energy source. (Morgan) Picture: www.emc.maricopa.edu

Solar Panels :

Solar Panels To convert the sun’s energy into electricity energy you need a photovoltaic cell system, solar panels. How they work Inside a photovoltaic cell there are many thin layers of silicon, and when light hits the cell an electrical charge moves between the layers where the electricity is stored. Pros Solar panels are fairly cheap and are very efficient in creating energy. They are also non-polluting and are renewable. (“Alternative Energy Sources”) Picture: treehugger.com

Conclusion :

Conclusion In conclusion, we are eventually going to need to convert to these alternative energies, so we should do it now! We need to stop burning fossil fuels as soon as possible so future generations can see the environment the way we saw it.
