McGivney in the basement of Saint Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT on March 29th 1882 128 years later, the Knights of Columbus has grown to be the largest lay Catholic organization in the world. Over 1.8 million Catholic families and over 15,000 Councils across the world. FRATERNAL BENEFIT SOCIETY: CHARITABLE WORKS Slide 2: FRATERNAL BENEFIT SOCIETY: CHARITABLE WORKS In 2009, nationwide philanthropy was down 2% KofC annual contributions increased by 3.5% Providing over 150 million dollars to charity Over 68 million volunteer hours. Based on standards of Independent Sector*, the total value of our volunteer efforts estimated to be at $1.39 Billion *Independent Sector is a third party that encourages volunteering.
