Classifying Rocks:

Classifying Rocks Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary

Before we begin….:

Before we begin…. Let us review each type of rock and the correct definition. The three major types of rocks that we are learning about are: Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic

Igneous Rock:

Igneous Rock Comes form a Latin word meaning “fire” Begin their life under the Earth’s crust and surface as lava or magma They are then formed through the cooling of this magma or lava There are over 700 types of igneous rocks

Sedimentary Rock:

Sedimentary Rock Is formed when sediments (small pieces of rocks) collect in one place and are put under great pressure Over a long period of time, the sediments press together and form a solid rock Most are formed under water

Metamorphic Rock:

Metamorphic Rock Comes from a Greek word that means to “change” Metamorphic rocks were originally igneous or sedimentary rocks The igneous or sedimentary rocks were put under great heat and pressure and “changed” into metamorphic rock

Now that we have learned a little more about each type of rock:

Now that we have learned a little more about each type of rock Let us move on to examples of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks

Igneous Rocks:

Igneous Rocks Andesite Basalt Granite Tuff Scoria

Sedimentary Rocks:

Sedimentary Rocks Coal Shale Sandstone Lime- stone
