When confronted by workplace conflict there are things to do and not do. As the manager your interest is the company, the resolution of the conflict and each employee. No Employee Input Don't mandate a solution; you want the staff invested in the solution. Using an Effective Conflict Resolution Process Increases Buy-In and Resolutions : Using an Effective Conflict Resolution Process Increases Buy-In and Resolutions When confronted by workplace conflict there are things to do and not do. What do you do if staff refuse to participate in conflict resolution? : What do you do if staff refuse to participate in conflict resolution? Offering staff the opportunity to resolve conflict is a much better option than being disciplined, having supervisor mandated solutions or taking no action at all. Staff Refusal Guides Manager Action : Staff Refusal Guides Manager Action When staffs refuse to cooperate or participate, its time to talk with them about your company policies, their personal responsibility for their behavior and actions and your responsibility as the owner or manager to take actions based on their behavior. Be clear what the options are and what the possible consequences are of not collaborating on a solution. Engage Employees in Solutions : Engage Employees in Solutions Collaborative Solutions are the intent of this type of conversation. It is not to threaten disciplinary action, but to talk about the reality of the situation and the need to resolve it. Choices : Choices Each individual makes choices, as supervisors our actions are based upon the behaviors and actions of the employee, their choices. Choices : Choices As the supervisor you are encouraging good choice making, but the reality is that some people will make a poor choice and choose to continue to act in ways that are not acceptable in your workplace. Employee Behavior is Your Guide : Employee Behavior is Your Guide In these situations you must follow your organizations policies as outlined for your employees in the employee handbook. Resolving the conflict and creating a good work environment for everyone is your first choice as the manager/supervisor/owner. Conflict Resolution : Conflict Resolution You can only move into a conflict resolution process when employees are willing to do so. When conflict resolution is not an option then as the manager you MUST move into a disciplinary action. Creating a Collaborative Work Environment : Creating a Collaborative Work Environment Produces Better Overall Results for Companies Conflict Resolution done in a collaborative, empowering way increases employee engagement, commitment and loyalty to the company. Through Collaborative Process : Through Collaborative Process Conflict is reduced, the need for conflict resolution is reduced and the overall health of the organization is increased.
